This North Korean crises is more dangerous than many think. I was talking to my brother yesterday. We both spent time in various countries in South East Asia. We are well aware of the oriental necessity of saving face. Kim (or his generals) have backed North Korea into a corner that they cannot emerge from with face. Their rhetoric has gone over the line and they must lose face, or go to war. At some point in the coming weeks, China must come to this realization. North Korea will be their "hook-in-the-mouth", dragging them into an unwanted war. Very serious indeed.
The map on that link shows a very large EMP. While possible, I believe it would require a multi-megaton weapon in an above atmosphere detonation.
While NK may have nuclear weapons I don't believe they are capable of a weapon that size or the ability to mount it to a warhead that they can put into orbit.
We have the capability however.

from what I understand the megatons need not be large for a large EMP. the real damage comes from when the earth's magnetic field snaps back to normal.
I would like to very dryly comment that much the same stuff was said by many here in the US, just prior to Pearl Harbor being attacked. If you remember, just about every excuse was made, that the little fellas could not do it, dared not do it, and lacked the intestinal fortitude to do it. And since it had never been done before............be prepared for the worst. Those things that are impossible............
Pry's commentary found elsewhere on the web suggests the Nork's nuke test the West laughed at for it "fizzled" was actually a gamma-ray enhanced 'Super-EMP' weapon. Such designs purportedly swap explosive yield for gamma rays which when interacting with the atmosphere and magnetic field, create more EMP damage than its explosive yield would indicate.
No matter if the NorK's are able to detonate a 50KT at altitude over central N. America (or over Tokyo) or if they just promise to do it and someone else actually does it. A sea-launch is deniable, esp. if there is a DPRK freighter full of rocks en-route to Pakistan that sinks right after the launch. The Russian, Israeli, USN, or Chinese sub can just swim submerged to the next port.
Of course, the USAF and the USN have this this capability, but how will the order make it down to MSgt. Conner or CPO Smith who knows how to run the launch? The O-6 on-post who receives, gives or transmits this order should be very afraid, and find a way to not comply.
The result of a successful EMP will be the same: No fallout, no accountability, but lots of chaos and lots of dead 1st world civilians. I still have a gut feeling that this is a charade created and managed by the Red Chinese to benefit themselves should Obama lost control somehow.. the NK's never, ever do anything with out their OK.. never.

To, "yankill": I believe this is a "Charade" alright.But I believe it is being perpertrated by Obama and the Chinese. Obama is a person who wakes up every day with the main goal on his agenda being the destruction of the United States of America as his main goal. Obama has spent all his time in office, advancing the cause of the muslim brotherhood in Egypt,libya,syria among other places and now all of a sudden over the last several months, Obama has been beating the wardrums against iran and north korea and is standing up to his fellow tyrants and despots, in order to save us? What's wrong with this picture?
A more likely scenario about what's going on is, Obama in collaboration with the north Koreans and Chinese, has worked out some kabuki theatre, where they are all pretending that north korea is threatening us. Then some type of terrorist ( EMP,Radiological, Bio/chem ) attack, will be launched by Obama on his own country ( USA ). Then blamed on either the north koreans, iranians or home grown,Christian,Right Wing, disgruntled Second Amendment advocates. He will use these attacks as a pretext to declare martial law and suspend all civil liberties. This is really what this is all about.
North Korea absolutely DOES NOT HAVE a weapon of the power required to generate a pulse. And even if they did, they have no delivery vehicle with the power and range to get it to where it needs to be to do damage.
No. If we are to have problems with them, it will be from a different direction altogether. Conventional problems of a local nature. Nuclear only comes into it if two nuclear powers a fucked in the head enough to have a stupidity summit.
An EMP weapon would finish off my pacemaker. If North Korea were to be Nuked back to the stone age, it would not be noticed in North Korea. They would think that things have been improved to be raised UP to the stone age. What a $h!thole of a country. Just look at the satellite photo of the globe at night and North Korea is as dark as 6 feet up a well digger's backside shows how backward that place is.
This is theatre staged by Kim first of all for domestic consumption, to establish his reputation with his military and to distract his population from their starvation. When WWIII doesn't occur he'll claim his boldness caused the Americans to back down.
He's also trying to extract more aid from the West. It's a common Nork pattern -- they act crazy and dangerous and get the west to pay 'em to calm down.
