The <a href=">Lind article</a> she references also points, in its turn, to Barbara Tuchman's "A Distant Mirror". All of Tuchman's stuff is hard-to-read, but ADM is the one I think is most worth the effort. It's a big book, 800-1000 pages if I recall correctly, and very detailed concerning a time most of us understand poorly if at all. She called the 14th century 'a distant mirror' because it so accurately replicates the 20th century, right down to the comparison between The Black Plague and AIDS. Take it with you to that mountain-top cabin when you go on vacation and plan to deal with nothing but Barbara while you're there.
