Unfortunately, our economy can no longer withstand honest scrutiny of our finances. Moving to end subsidized underwriting of bad financial institutions isn't going to nudge them back towards responsibility, it can only collapse the system entirely.

A collapse is inevitable one way or another. That's not the problem.

The problem is that the collapse is inevitably going to be blamed on the free market rather than on government intervention, no matter how it plays out.

albert Speer's "The Slave State" is also worth a look - pretty boring but shows the in-fighting and structure of the NAZI war economy.
