Torches? Latest collectivist insanity as Long Island town goes medieval. Be interesting to see what the crime rate does.

Nearly 400-Year-Old Long Island Town Passes Controversial ‘Dark Skies’ Law -- No Outdoor Lighting Allowed In Shelter Island, N.Y. From Sunset To Sunrise
Citizens are asking about lighting up backyards with barbeques and torches. According to new town code such “temporary” lighting is excluded from the dark skies law.

Sounds like gas lights are exempt, so I wonder if I can get a job as lamp-lighter in a town that was founded when streetlamps were lit by hand.

...On second thought, f#ck it. Long Island is still part of NY and I'll be damned if I'll leave gun-freedom Indiana for a collectivist sh!thole like NY.

[Sarc] Maybe I should get a job with Monsanto, which just acquired the infamous BLACKWATER mercenary company, so I can pull double duty lighting gaslights and shooting stray dogs with my company-issue M4. After all, when you're a JBT your duty is to kill all dogs first! [/Sarc]

Oh, but think of the fossil fuel that won't be burned to supply power! Think of the reduction in global warming! They might be able to live on Long Island a few more years before the rising sea covers it. How wonderful. Think green, people.

This is the DUMBEST law I think I have seen in a while. This quote from the article by their supervisor...

“We came up with a very reasonable and calm law that will preserve our dark skies while we still have them,” Supervisor James Dougherty said.

Clearly this guy is dumber than a bag of hammers. In what world is this law "reasonable" and what exactly are you "preserving" in case he wasn't aware the second a light is turned off a magical thing happens... it gets dark...again.

Monsanto, along with Disney and quite a few other multinationals, hires Academi for various nefarious purposes, but they don't actually own them. They were, however, bought up by a shady consortium of 'investors'. Which doesn't really make me feel much better.

So that's what it was like to live in London in 1943.
We're getting more and more opportunities to find out what living under siege feel like...

With what's coming, they're going to get their wish sooner than they think.

Normally not happy about stuff like this but we do have way to much outdoor lighting. Not sure I like the government getting involved though.

I'm with Tony. Dark skies don't make a heck of a lot of sense in a place like Long Island, where you can't really see stars well in any case, but I sure hate the occasional boob out in the Wyoming boonies with a mercury vapor light. People scared of the dark I guess. Govco should keep out of this though.

Well, when SHTF and electricy goes away or prices skyrocket, I guess this problem will pass all by itself.

Having come from LI I can tell you that shelter island has been populated by strange creatures suffering from the same diseases of the mind commonly found in NJ and California.. they think they are saving the earth and getting in touch with nature.. Good fishing and scenery but not much else.
