I've been railing against doctors ... especially Pediatricians .. advising parents (and especially their children, out of the presence of the parents) for years.
Archive copies of the American Association of Pediatricians [AAP] reveal that has been part of their "Guidelines" for decades. In recent years, they have discontinued advice about firearms in most of their online material.
Apparently, that tendency to familial interference is an embedded part of their culture, even though they no longer SPECIFICALLY say so on sources available to the public.
In past years, they recommended separating the children from the parents, and then closely question the children about 'guns in the home'. The message? "Guns Are Bad!"
It's an obvious attempt to sway children from their parents' political and social teachings by subterfuge, and as such is less than professional ... certainly dishonest.
As in the debate over "Star Wars" and "Take Your Guns To Work", much of the debate over Florida's "Docs vs. Glocks" is missing the whole point of the law.
Imagine you are expecting the birth of your first child or have first brought them home from the hospital after they are born. You need to find a Pediatrician. More over, as in searching for help on any topic, you need to find a good one, and you need to find one now. You find that Pediatricians, because they tend to get sued almost as often as Ob/Gyn doctors, are hard to find, and often don't accept new patients. According to The Miami Herald, under the Affordable Care Act there are 250,000 children in the Orlando area who qualify for one of the exchange plans and 7 pediatricians in the insurance pool who are (sort of) available to treat ACA patients. After canvassing all of your friends who have blazed that trail before you you finally find "Dr. Right". But then when interviewing the doctor for the first time he/she says: "Does anyone in your family own any firearms? I won't accept new patients who are exposed to firearms in the home."
Yes it did happen. It happened to a family friend, but it doesn't happen any more, or at least not as openly.
And that was the reason Florida passed "Docs vs. Glocks"!
There are to my knowledge only two subgroups in the American culture who are fair game for discrimination: Christians and Gun Owners!
