That historical stuttering sound. 2012 or 1932?

History never exactly repeats itself, though it occasionally stutters. -- Anonymous.
United States Army cavalry and tanks mass to disperse the Bonus Army, Washington, DC, 1932.

The Bastard signed the National Defense Authorization Act, on New Years Eve, when nobody was looking. He was dead set against it, that is until they put in the provision that He would have the power to impliment it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/31/obama-defense-bill_n_1177836.html?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmain5%7Cdl1%7Csec3_lnk2%26pLid%3D124161

Coincidentally, the Army is massing together with a duty muster the entire month of February 2012. I understand it is being done across the country. Now ain't that interesting?

DAMN, Dutchman! Do you REALLY think it's gonna hit the fan THIS year? I was figuring it would take at least 13 for them to get bold enough to light the fuse.

My money's on 13 or possibly 14.

But this time the death toll won't be in just the millions. I fear the collapse of the European and U.S. economies will bring the Asian economies down with them. When the planetary transportation web collapses the death toll from famine will be enormous. How many people in the world these days survive solely because of food imports from the U.S.? IMS, none of the Muslim countries feed themselves. They will be especially hard hit along with Africa and the sub-continent.

Gonna get MEAN folks. Gonna get mean.

I never fully understood why 1932 went the way it did. In my school days we were taught that MacArthur was terribly clever and waited until the "Bonusers" were worn out and hungry and just overwhelmed them camp by camp with Patton's tanks.
Never made sense to me since they went to the capital because they were worn out and hungry to begin with.

---never mind; just read on wiki that they used gas on the vets.....

While "occupying" or marching or camping, take good care of your feet. Here's a link:

http://diabetes.webmd.com/guide/caring-feet

(h/t http://www.survivalblog.com)

DIabetics and neuropathy patients must take the most care of their feet, and people who are, or could be, "on-foot" should follow a similar program.

The transition from motorized vehicles to pedestrian is one that should always be considered a possibility. Prepare to jettison excess baggage, with actual essentials separated into a convenient carrier. Reduce "actual essentials" to less than 30% of your ideal body weight (not what you currently weigh) so that you can avoid stress damage from carrying too much (young Soldiers/Marines who carry 100%+ of body weight very much become mid-life cripples). Moderate loading will reduce walking injury and allow continental-length walks.

Hurting feet suck, and make all other things worse. When your feet stop hurting, you are either a well-prepared genius, or are in big trouble.

If you have curiously large/small or non-standard feet, double up on quantity. Re-supply (prêt-à-porter) is unlikely for size 15 double-wide boots. My 6'-8" buddy lists getting boots as a significant incentive for joining the US Army. His one set of current Danners was almost $300 and had to be special ordered.

Have extra broken-in footwear, extra socks (tested, fitting, warm layers), and foot treatment ready. The mobility of the American people will depend on it.

"Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time"

Cheers.

With Government being the source of 60% of all Americans income (employees, dependents, beneficiaries, not counting contractors but they are too going to be considered collaborators), I would expect any serious threat to be met with an initial warning to "go home and behave" followed by overwhelming force, inevitably lethal. Protest will be equated with Terrorism, participants criminalized and made an enemy of the State.

That will be time for many people to chose their side, and it will be very late.

Government will defend itself, by any means necessary. Count on it. Those in control have everything to lose, and will spend most of it to assure keeping the rest.

The least anyone can do is not contribute to the power of the Leviathan, as much as possible. The most we can do is... whatever you can imagine.

Cheers.

The "Bonus Army" debacle was one of the worst in our history - and perhaps its best-kept secret, thanks to co-operation of the era's media.

Generals later lauded for their roles in fighting the axis were instrumental in routing these poor starving Americans seeking only a redress promised them by their government. One wonders what would have happened had those combat veterans showed up armed with "captured war trophies" ? Perhaps this is another example of "but for lack of a leader" ?

By all accounts I've read Anacostia flats could have ran red with blood had these vets chose a more violent stance. Instead they chose to conduct a "peaceable protest" trusting to the media and the public for support. We all know the results.

I agree, there's a certain amount of corrrespondence to the current political situation. What happens to those vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan ? Or other vets being forcibly discharged into an economic morass ? Might they not seek the same redress as the vets of the "Great War" ? >JH

I have to wonder whether the bringing home of US troops from Iraq was designed to coincide with the new NDAA bill. And the fire sale on military hardware to police departments across the country.

Some things are too conicidental.

@@ BadCyborg -

FWIW, muslims, they say, taste like chicken. Two birds, one stone if you can get the meat clean enough. They used to say that to cook a muslim, toss the meat into a pot with a hammer head and boil. When the hammer head is soft, the meat is edible.

@@ pdxr13 - Your comment is excellent and right on target - feet are always the most vulnerable points, no matter the weather, terrain, era, weaponry... the feet MUST be cared for.
Of course, if you are sharing any of this with Mike Vdb, as I have done a few dozen times, he will most likely blow it off....

It's not hard to imagine Nancy Pelosi having the same respect for us as George III's ministers did for the colonists, or the US government for the concerns of the South in the 1850's. Or for that matter in the reverse direction in all three cases.

One only needs to be aware of Lord Percy's boast that he could subdue all of North America with a single regiment, the colonists' belief that all they needed to do was drive the British out of Boston, both the North's and South's conviction that the other side would sue for peace in six weeks at the outside to realise that underestimation of your adversary is one of the most common and costly mistakes that can be made.

Let's try not to make it this time, shall we?

The Veteran's march was a bit more complex than Good Protesters, Bad Feds.

The marchers were asking for something , a bonus they were not legally entitled too at that time.

Granted they needed they money then not later but the Feds at the time thought they were stopping a a socialist handout which more or less they were.

Now the vets certainly could, maybe should have come armed and probably could have swarmed the Senate and House which would have accomplished nothing save triggering a Junta or a civil war or putting the US under a much more authoritarian state.

With Communism and Nazism on the rise it was a bad time for political shenanigans.

The US was vulnerable to both, Communism especially (Roosevelt was Commie Lite basically) but also National Socialism (c.f. Father Conklin et all) and odds are one or both or some vile religious hybrid would have been the result.

To win the rebels would have to have eliminated the ruling elite of the US, in Stalinist style bloodbath. This meant destroying women, children, Universities, clubs and other social institutions of the elite.

That is antithetical to a Republican system of governance and to the continuity of the union (trust drops to zero).

If nothing else the veterans were patriots and so an armed escalation as off the table.

This allowed the US to hold together and in time join in WW2

By not retaliating, the Veterans inadvertently saved the Union and very possibly good chunks of the world from a much worse fate.

WASHINGTON -- Indefinite military detention of Americans became the law of the land Saturday, as President Barack Obama signed a defense bill that codified that authority, even as he said he would not use it.

The National Defense Authorization Act states how the military is to be funded, but also includes a number of controversial provisions on arresting and holding suspected terrorists, which at first drove Obama to threaten a veto.

He retreated from that threat after Congress added provisions that took the ultimate authority to detain suspects from the military's hands and gave it to the president

Press lamestream propaganda ministry is lying again, no surprise. Zero would have nothing to do with NDAA/BUTCHER'S BILL 369 would he... /sarcasm

Zero did a signing statement(!) decrying* what is in the bill (yet signs it anyway) and saying indefinite detentions of U.S. citizens without trial "won't be authorized" and you can trust him -- oh really, you can. C'mon, has he ever lied to you?

*decrying here, yet Lindsay Graham admitted Zero administration behind detaining American citizens indefinitely:

from the congressional record debate, http://www.lawfareblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Detainee-Debate-SASC-floor-Nov-17-and-Nov-18-20111.pdf (NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2012 -- Senate - November 17, 2011), comments were from Sen. Linsay Graham regarding the Bill

"..But why did we take out the language Senator Levin wanted me to put in about an American citizen could not be held indefinitely if caught in the homeland? The administration asked us to do that. Why did they ask us to do that? It makes perfect sense. If American citizens have joined the enemy and we captured them at home, we want to make sure we know what they are up to, and we do not want to be required, under our law, to turn them over to a criminal court, where you have to provide them a lawyer at an arbitrary point in time. So the administration was probably right to take this out.(page 45) "
