Remember how we can't be trusted with concealed carry firearms like the "trained expert" cops because we might shoot somebody who doesn't deserve it?

‘Friendly fire’ eyed in death of hero ATF agent. More evidence of "Only Ones'" competence.

Just goes to show how eager LEO's are to get the guns ablazin !!! And all over a hand full of pills and the potential pellet gun danger. I'll bet the first round fired was not a pellet!!!

very recently in MA, a state trooper shot his neighbor w/ a shotgun cuz he mistook her for a deer as she was walking her dogs in the woods behind her house. No repercussions at his job, from what I heard on the news.

The victim wasn't just an off duty Law Imposement officer, he was one of those "Gun Experts" at ATF!

It goes to show you that off duty cops shouldn't be allowed to carry firearms. To quote the Brady Bunch, "It'll only add to the violence."

You know, it is now Federal law that off duty and retired cops can carry nationwide. Doesn't that mean more off duty and retired cops are going to be mistaken for criminals and shot dead?

We should ban off duty and retired cops from carrying guns at any time. If it saves even one cop's life, wouldn't it be worth it?

Oh, and by the way, off duty cops, if you find yourself in the middle of a violent crime, DON'T get involved! Don't take the law into your own hands! Don't take action! You will most likely be mistaken for a criminal! Stay calm and be a good witness. If you are about to be a victim, use pepper spray. Carry a personal alarm. Also, point a finger and shout, "Stranger! Danger!"

Since this was Noo Yawk, the po-po just KNEW that "anybody with a gun is a bad guy" -- and so they shot the wrong man.

Nice.

What's SICK is that this *WILL* be used by Aunty to support their contention that "people with guns just complicate the situation and get innocent people killed."

On the bright side, maybe we can learn something from the situation that will save one of *US* someday...

So, let's evaluate:

The *ONLY* person who could be SURE about the ID of the perp(s) was the dead cop. Seems to me the other two fell for the "gun==bad-guy" fallacy and should be up on manslaughter charges at a minimum.

What they *SHOULD* have done was try to prone out everyone until they could sort 'em out and figure out who's who...

Sadly though, this demonstrates AGAIN that we can't rely on them to do that - if you're not wearing the magic suit, with the magic tin-talisman pinned to your chest, then you're a "target" to any who DO!

Now...

What if WE were the (now) dead-guy?

Seems to me that the #1 lesson for me to learn is that if I'm going to draw my gun then I'd better damn well use it -- no talking, no chasing the guy if he decides to run.

If he's standing there with a gun demanding drugs be put in a bag, he's the robber and deserves whatever he gets -- so I'd better just STFU and try to take him out before he even knows I'm there!

If by some fluke he manages to run out the door, then I'd better think twice about chasing him - instead I'd be better off finding (or staying in) some cover and waiting for something resemblinga.

Further, REGARDLESS of my position, if I've got a gun in my hand it had better be firing, and I'd better be screaming "POLICE! POLICE!" over and over and over. They can lock me up for "impersonating..." later, but I want to be alive to deal with it!

To recap:
(1) Don't talk - SHOOT!
(2) Don't chase - stay low until you get the "all clear" or "olly-olly-ox-in-free!"!
(3) IMPERSONATE A COP! Better to fight a stupid charge (really - under such circumstances what jury would find you guilty?) than to be shot by them!

Any other input?

And don't forget that we are hearing more and more of police shootings in which over 10 rounds are fired at the "person of interest".

A possible fix is to train the officers out of the "us vs. everybody else" mentality. The officers need to assume that everyone they encounter is legally armed, just as they are, even in New York City. Just as every non-police officer is held accountable for every round that they fire, so should every police officer. No excuses for everyone. Equal rights, justice and equal process for all under the law, without preference or prejudice, badge/shield or no badge/shield. No more shoot first, ask questions later, let God sort it all out mentality. We are not living in a free-fire zone.

Don't like those rules? Find a different way to make a living. There are plenty of others who can and will do the job under these rules.

The dead officer tried to stop a robbery, and was at the store to pick up his father's cancer meds. His wife and son were outside in the car waiting for him. Sad story. Regardless of the tragic outcome, we should be grateful for the slain officer's sacrifice. Supposedly, the officers mother died on 12/18.

What sacrifice? He was shot dead by a brother cop in an act of fratricide!

If I, as Joe Citizen, tried to stop a robbery and was shot dead by overzealous cops with an "anyone with a gun is a bad guy, so murder him" attitude, would you call my death a "sacrifice"?

See my comment above.
