Dave Workman reports in "BULLETIN: Bellevue group calls for Senate investigation of ATF controversy," that the Washington State based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is calling for a Senate investigation of the Project Gunwalker scandal.

What with Gun Owners of America walking point on the scandal and now CCRKBA joining the patrol, one wonders when the NRA weinermobile is going to arrive on the scene. I guess the Lairds of Fairfax are still figuring the angles of advantage for them.

David Codrea just jammed a steaming foot-long up the NRA weinermobile's tailpipe. And he didn't do Darrell Issa any favors either.

Gun rights activists have been trying for weeks to get Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) to use his position as Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, one The Washington Post credits with “almost limitless subpoena power,” to initiate hearings on the “Project Gunwaker”* scandal. Their efforts were given fresh impetus by Rep. RaúlLabrador (R-ID), who pledged to encourage Issa to conduct such hearings.

So far, Issa has been silent on the issue, which is curious when you consider his good record on gun issues, and also a pledge he made when he first decided to run for public office in the 1998 United States Senate campaign.

Friends of mine from the now-defunct The Lawyer’s Second Amendment Society used to host monthly ATF Night dinners at a Los Angeles-area restaurant . . Candidate Issa attended one such dinner in 1997, and was presented with a document LSAS was using to determine commitment to the tight to keep and bear arms, the “Pre-Oath of Office” . . .

By signing this document, Issa freely acknowledged his “duty and responsibility to protect the inalienable natural arms rights of the people.” Knowing how the entire “Mexican crime guns” issue has been exploited to not only call for new restrictions on that right, but also to bestow new powers and provide more resources to those who are abusing what they now have in order to help achieve those goals, there is no way Rep. Issa can plausibly avoid investigating the Gunwalker scandal.

So why has Issa not stepped up to the plate yet?

In fairness, you should read the case LaPierre makes. I did, and frankly, it does not bring me any closer to his position. In fact, reading skillfully crafted marketing claims like “When NRA first began our campaign to fire Eric Holder we were one of just a few voices in the wilderness” makes my jaw drop at the sheer, amazing chutzpah of it. I guess, yeah, this campaign is their baby, but somehow, LaPierre in camel hair rags eating locusts and honey, was not the first thought in my mind back when there really were voices in the wilderness, who knew they were on to something huge and dangerous. . .

Perry could be a contender for an NRA endorsement during the presidential primary season, a step that the gun group took only once before. In 2008, the NRA backed Bill Richardson in the Democratic primaries.

“We’re always evaluating and trying to figure out what’s best for our members,” the spokesman said, adding that “no decision has been made yet.”

While NRA primary endorsements are unusual, Perry’s gun record is stronger than his chief rival, Mitt Romney. Perry’s spokesman, Mark Miner, said the candidate “hopes to receive their endorsements in the future.”

There is one thing Governor Perry (and, for that matter, the rest of the candidates) could do that would, if NRA leadership wants to actually show some, well . . . leadership, in bringing public attention to the "Project Gunwalker" atrocity, go a long way toward earning that endorsement. National Gun Rights Examiner David Codrea has urged voters to demand of Republican presidential candidates an answer to these two questions:

* As a candidate for president, will you issue a statement calling for reauthorization of an Independent Counsel to investigate all aspects of the “Fast and Furious” scandal, and to follow the trail wherever it leads? And will you recommend prosecution where evidence warrants it, and punishment of those found guilty—no matter how high up in the government they are or have been?

* If elected, will you direct the attorney general to conduct a full and transparent investigation to include vigorous prosecutions where warranted?

Anybody want to bet that the NRA weinermobile drivers will avoid making that demand? They like to talk "Gunwalker" for the benefit of fund-raising but they have been damn reluctant to demand that their favorite lawmakers actually DO anything about it.

Big Week for Project Gunwalker Scandal: Bomb Damage Assessment Time for both the Justice Department and the Coalition of Willing Lilliputians.

Readers will recall my first post from Monday morning, predicting a
"Big Week for Gunwalker Scandal," beginning with an ATF agent's suggested witness list for Senator Grassley to get to the bottom of the mess. Later that morning I posted my letter to the Consul General of the Estados Unidos Mexicanos in Atlanta -- In English AND Spanish and, more tellingly, BLOCKBUSTER: Open Source Analysis of "Fast & Furious" Bust Confirms It As An Integral Part of the Project Gunwalker Cover-up.

On Tuesday, we covered "Silence is the New Loud" with Sound of Silence: Wagering odds on a scandal, cops become crooks & Kurt Hofmann asks the 1.1 Billion Dollar Question about Project Gunwalker. Later on Tuesday we posted "STONEWALL: The empire strikes back. DOJ issues denial on death of Brian Terry." with the added professional assessment from someone in the government that it was "Standard cover-up material that even a boy of 8 would laugh at." Also on Tuesday we noted that Gun Owners of America had taken official notice of the scandal and was mobilizing its membership.

On Wednesday, we issued A Call to All Second Amendment Activists: There is a way you can help to shine the bright light of truth on the Project Gunwalker Scandal, which began to pay off by the end of the week. Later on Wednesday came "Looks like Grassley's office ain't buying the stonewall on the Project Gunwalker Scandal. Five questions for the Congress to ask under oath." Also on Wednesday came my call to remember "The nameless, faceless dead of the Project Gunwalker Scandal," damning the DOJ's apparent attitude of "What's a few more dead Mexicans in the grand scheme of things?"



Wednesday was a long, long day and around midnight I reported on the discovery of the "Rosetta Stone: David Codrea Posts Grassley Letter to Eric Holder with Project Gunwalker DOCUMENTS," Senator Grassley's bitch slap of AG Holder which concluded with the demand: "The best way to honor (Brian Terry's) memory is to come clean."

On Thursday I described some reaction to Grassley's letter and the leaked documents in ATF Whistleblowers to Senator Grassley: "Welcome to the party, pal!" In the same post I reminded readers, "But remember, the fight against this evil is an open invitation to YOU as well."

On Friday I took the lamestream media to task in "The story upon the stair. The failure of 'authorized journalists' to pick up on Senator Grassley's bitch slap of Eric Holder".

Also on Friday I mirrored on Vince Cefalu's damning CUATF piece "An ATF agent's indictment. 'ATF DIDN'T make every effort to interdict these guns or they WOULD HAVE been interdicted.'" And, later, I had fun at SAC Newell's expense by reporting on the ATF job posting occasioned by his upcoming transfer to Mexico: "Wanted: individual skilled in firearms smuggling, insulting Mexicans, threatening subordinates, massive cover-up . Lack of scruples a plus. Apply ATF."

Friday was every bit as long a day as Wednesday, for I then reported on David's call to Second Amendment activists, "David Codrea: ‘Project Gunwalker’ protest can help kill ATF’s long gun reporting proposal." I later amended that post with a link to Alvie D. Zane's letter to Arizona Governor Jane Brewer which I characterized as an excellent example of David's motto, "Any chair in a bar fight."



Also on Friday, results of our campaign began to flower in other venues. First came "Ask and you shall receive: Stacey Delikat in Phoenix comes through with the first media report on the Grassley letter to Holder."

Then I reported that the Citizen's Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms had joined GOA: CCRKBA calls for Senate investigation of Project Gunwalker Scandal. I observed that the "NRA weinermobile (is) still looking for a parking place."



But I spoke only slightly too soon, because as David reports this morning: "NRA issues statement on Grassley ATF inquiry."

So here we are, on Saturday afternoon, doing a bit of bomb damage assessment from the "Big Week."

Inside reports indicate that this has been a pretty excremental week for Eric Holder and the cover-up crew, full of meetings, nasty questions, and recriminations. On our side, we keep waiting for the Empire to really strike back -- not like that ill-considered "bite me" letter they wrote to Grassley which resulted in the public posting of the Project Gunwalker documents. Lanny Breuer is the subject of some speculation on our side simply because, in the words of one of our brain trust of analysts, he is said to own "Martian intelligence." He is hip deep in this and to expect him to go quietly into the bureaucratic good night of defeat and public dishonor without a fight is a pipe dream.

We haven't seen the last of him, but then he hasn't seen the last of the Coalition of Willing Lilliputians either.

For now, today, both sides are in bomb damage assessment mode. Expect follow-up strikes from both sides of the cover-up of the circumstances of the murder of Brian Terry.

The endorsement of a powerful gun-rights group is up for grabs in a key Senate race.

The National Rifle Association’s (NRA) decision on whether to endorse Democratic incumbent Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) or Republican Rep. Denny Rehberg (Mont.) could be the deciding factor in what is expected to be a close contest. Political analysts say that the winner of this election could determine which party will control the Senate in January of 2013.

If Tester voted for the likes of Holder and is not on the front lines demanding the truth in the Gunwalker Scandal out of sheer contrition (and he did and he ain't) then why should the NRA back the Democrat sonofabitch? Can the Lairds of Fairfax come in from "the wilderness" long enough to figure THAT out?

GOP Sellout in the Budget Bill (and the NRA won't even criticize it.)

Sam Stein reports at HuffPo: "Gun Control Advocates Win A Rare Victory In Budget Deal."

Gun-control advocates won a rare victory this past Friday when congressional negotiators removed a provision from the final budget deal that would have made it much harder for the government to regulate firearm sales along the Mexico border.

The amendment, offered by Reps. Dan Boren (D-Okla.) and Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.), would have prevented federal funds from being used by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to track bulk sales of long guns in southwestern states. Up until late moments in the negotiations, sources familiar with the discussions say, it remained in the text of the final continuing resolution.

But sometime before the final deal was announced on Friday night, lawmakers stripped the rider from the bill. The move came after concerned lawmakers and even Mexico's Ambassador to the United States lobbied congressional leadership and the White House to strip the language from the bill.

"ATF is already chronically underfunded and has been without a confirmed director since 2006 as a result of inaction by past sessions of Congress," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a co-chair of the coalition Mayors Against Illegal Guns, said in a statement. "We welcome this sign that leaders in Washington may be ready to step up and help law enforcement save lives."

Privately, gun-control advocates acknowledge that the simple removal of the Boren-Rehberg Amendment was a minor victory. To wildly cheer such a development could give off the impression of that longer-term objectives are hopelessly unreachable.

Yet, as one operative in the gun control community notes, "it's hard to recall the last time the NRA didn't get a priority," which the Boren-Rehberg Amendment was. And the amendment's defenders were notably silent after it was stripped from the final budget deal.

NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said the gun-rights lobby did not put out a statement on the rider being stripped. Rehberg's office did not have a statement either. A call to Boren's office was not immediately returned.

Ask yourself this question: what is it about ATF funding in general -- and the Boren-Rehberg amendment in particular -- that is so important to the Democrats?

Here's another: Why is "sellout" the default position for the GOP?

And why is silence the order of the day for the NRA when their poltical allies decide to sell out the Second Amendment?

I guess I'll have to join the NRA again just to get in the front door. David and me ought to be about as popular as two skunks under the front pew at church on a bright and shiny Sunday morning. Since David lives about 100 miles away, we've already agreed that I will drop my sleeping bag at his place and drive to the convention together. I dunno, do you think we need a convoy escort to avoid ambush by General Sebastian Snowflake's Weinermobile Cavalry?

Now, if we can just keep them from jumping in their weinermobile and selling us out on private sales.
