What a crock of crap.

"'If the internet goes down, half the planet will come to a standstill': why 'preppers' will be the last ones standing."
No, it just means that they'll be the second or third ones eaten when the cannibal biker gang that outnumbers them 100 to 1 comes through.

The amount of fail here is telling!

When (and if) the cannibal biker gang leaves--they will outnumber my corpse by A LOT LESS than your 100 to one.

I don't understand the hate. Certainly there are some kooks and oddballs in the prepper "community" but there are also those like myself that aren't prepping for the zombie apocalypse or nuclear war - we're prepping for things that actually occur in our areas - floods, tornados, storms, power failures.
I don't have an underground bunker, 46 years worth of MRE's, or an autographed copy of World War Z.
But I do have what I need to make it through a blizzard without having to elbow my way through the crowds at WalMart.

I don't figure on surviving when the cannibal biker gang comes through. But I'll take comfort in knowing that there will be less of them to get what I got than when they came on the property to begin with.

I have this image of everyone under, say, 35 or do, staring blankly at their cell phones until they either starve to death, or the Internet gets turned back on.

100 to 1.....
Seems like fair odds...taking on me and mine

The zombie apocalypse is already here. Just looks at millennials walking downtown - every last one of them staring at their phones with their heads down. It's true. Without "the net" and their music players, they are LOST.

But yeah. Survivalists of the non-whack job type are set up to take care of themselves without official assistance for when mother nature farts in their direction. The "extended functions" of coping with ever increasing difficult situations is something many pick up because, well, some of those things are possible, and they are already working in that direction.

The goofs on Doomsday Preppers ( aside from two I know) are used to stereotype the community. They make the rest of us look bad. There was a time when being a survivalist was not a bad thing. That was the WWII gen and before. When the BDU'd nuts started running around in the forests screaming at black helicopters, the name got trashed. "Prepper," funny enough, was a replacement name we came up with oursleves, so that we wouldn't be associated with the 'tards. It was hardly noticed until a couple years ago. We'll create another, so we can isolate our way of doing things from the johny-come-lately prepper-fashionista mall-ninja DOOMSday-Prepper rejectoids.

We train in many different ways. But the common goal is to come through difficult times, and help others along the way.

I think that the point is that prepping is of limited value unless you also prepare to not be outnumbered 50-1 by the cannibal biker gang (social limitations make 100-1 unlikely). In other words, prepping without consideration for how to build and maintain a local community adequate to produce and defend the goods necessary to human existence is not really preparation for a total civilization collapse.

That said, isolated preppers who manage to avoid being robbed/killed by their unprepared neighbors will probably have worked out how to evade/escape/deter the cannibal bikers once those come around.

I thought it would be smart to work with neighbors and develop a mutual neighborhood defense and survival plan. I figured it could really pay off if ever needed - and no harm done if not! Plus think of the fun - group outings at the range! Well . . . needless to say . . . it didn't work out. Feeling them out easy, one guy thinks the only problem with the world is that the republicans are stopping Obama from transforming America - never got to talking firearms with him - haven't really spoke to him since! The other guy doesn't think people should be allowed to own those rifles and big "clips" - he thinks the mob on the block during a blackout after a hurricane is a "police problem" - I pointed out there was no phone or cell or 911 service after Irene - his answer was "run in your house and lock the door"! (Hope that works for ya!) I had hope for the next guy I talked to - I asked him about the big yellow flag with the snake he has flying in front of his house. He started talking enthusiastically about government spying and first amendment infringements. I mentioned unconstitutional gun laws and he said "Oh - my wife wouldn't let me have a gun!!!"

I GAVE UP!

At least MY wife likes going to the range. She's a pretty good shot!
I got her a Glock for her birthday.

The Brits are doing such a good job at personifying the herd mentality. You have to squint really hard to see how those guys ruled an empire.

Hurricane Sandy happened and it only took three days before people were dumpster diving looking for something to eat. When their take out list on their phones failed to function for e couple days they were literally starving. Old fogies underestimate the dependence the young have upon technology. The young simply cannot function without it. Of course there will eventually be roving bands of mad max biker gangs but old fogies are also underestimating the networking that the tea party and 9-12 project sprouted.

In other words, the fact of the matter is that some peepers who appear to be easy targets are not quite as alone or as vulnerable as they may at first appear. The roving bands are actually more vulnerable and the hunters may well mostly have a sharp moment of insight when they realize they are actually the hunted.

Got operation Venus flytrap?

Silly "doomer" bullshit. AND. If the "grid" ever does go down; Gas will dry up in about three days. Starvation will set in in about 14 days. "Roving biker gangs" PAHOOY!!!! Where pray tell me will the bands of steel clad mad max kiddy eaters GET the 1500 Gal. of P.O.L. a day they would need to support even a modest company of men? SILLY DOOMER BULLSHIT! Think! (if you can) If the "gang" can't walk to its target, and isn't horse mounted,30 days after TEOTWAWKI they won't be coming. You guy read too much doom porn.---Ray

There is another component that was hinted about but not really spoken. That is the mental capacity and training to do what you are probably going to need to do to survive. That is, when the "roving cannibal biker gang" shows up, you take them out at a distance while they are parking and dropping their kickstands, not as they are charging at you. Those of us with any military training were taught that those were targets, not people, and the target must fall to count. We have the high ground, ammo is plentiful, so it would be a turkey shoot. Remains dumped in the swamp across the road. Most of the bikes would have the fuel drained and be used as roadblock material. A couple of the better ones become ours for emergency transportation.

By this point, I will have lost my humanity, but hopefully still alive.

I'm not sure where the dislike for preppers comes from. I consider myself one...I have enough food to cover my family for a year (and we store the kind of food we normally eat), plenty of firearms and ammunition (minimum 2500 rounds/weapon) and the training to use them, medical supplies, consumables, generators and fuel, and several like-minded friends locally. I grow a sizable garden, can my own food, I can fish and hunt. Same goes for my group of friends.

We don't prepare for a specific event. A SHTF scenario is more likely to be personal than global. Losing a loved one, getting hit with an unexpected expense, losing a job...these things would constitute a SHTF moment for me and mine. Not having to worry about food and other things takes the edge off. A local storm that knocks out power for a week would be a non-issue for me.

How is this goofy behavior? Since when is self-reliance a bad thing?

The folks you see on TV aren't preppers. They're idiots. The prepper community around me is comprised of a bunch of pretty bright people who don't wear foil hats.

IM not against any preppers at all, no matter their mindset. unfortunately I think you will be right though, the scrappiest of the urban survivors will have no moral compunctions about HOW they survive or do, so you comment is probably more correct than most want to think about..Kind of a dire view of potential futures we have coming..To say that a near event where by there is societal collapse, is not so much a doomsayer but a realization that we really are in odd times and that outcome is uncertain.

But one thing I am SURE of is that people GROSSLY underestimate the things people will do for their own survival when WROL is ighly questionable/gone and morals and values of the starving with it...especially for those people who will feel desperate hunger pangs (who cannot do for themselves (on welfare and EBT handouts)are are already tending to be lawless fuckers anyway)within a week maybe sooner when clean potable water runs out a common digestive diseases/discomforts take over within days. Cannibalism will not be a years away thing when that happens, but a DAYS away event, once the trigger event happens....Sign Me, Neal Jensen

Thanks KEUTSA....prime example of why the country is so screwed up now...and basically what I've found here in AZ as well. As a nation, we deserve what's coming b/c we've failed to be vigilant in defense of liberty....in fact, most people can't even cite what liberty principles are or more importantly, how they relate to our current political system of corruption.

The thin line of civility is broken when an individual's own existence or, more pressing yet, his FAMILY's, is threatened. The worse the threat, the quicker the fall. Starvation is hardly a fear today. If that becomes an approaching reality, you, yours and everyone else's becomes the object of desire. Civility exists where there is moral courage and /or hope. I sincerely hope that Christians remain so (the faithful should) and work to preserve life and cooperative support. Difficult times bring difficult decisions.

Being a survivalist /prepper, to me anyway, means retaining the living and social skills of our grandparents and those living righteously through the great depression and WWII. It also means promoting self reliance, community and the rights and abilities of self defense. I've been invited three times to appear on Doomsday Preppers and another show. Turned it down. No one publicizing themsleves on such a manner stands much of a chance, in my book, during a large event. Even in peace time, they have placed the mark of a burglar on their homes. Someone will see, recognize and talk. Word gets around, and so do thieves and worse.

I try to write about these things in a manner that regular folks can digest. It isn't easy. Lacking in depth conversation and explanation, things get screwed up and misunderstood. Oh well. I try anyway. But preparing for nasty times begins in your head and heart, flows into daily decisions that eventually include family and good friends. From there, a dispersed community is founded, and hopefully grows from there. If one can keep his head and fears from getting away from him, he can work something useful into the lives of others.

Meanwhile, he gets lumped in with the nut jobs that have no business influencing others, carrying a gun, or voting.
