Threeper may be relocating to Minneapolis. Seeking info and guidance.

Just received this email, which says in part:

Do you have any knowledge of the Minneapolis, MN area? My employer is considering moving me there from up here in Alaska. I don't know that I want to move from here down to mainland "Amerika", but any pros/cons you or others could enlighten me on would be appreciated. I know the gun laws there are not up to Alaskan standards, but other things I wonder about are other like-minded people / 3pers in the area, the possibility of joining an "Absolved" reading group... the tendency of the local "only ones" / state-sponsored terrorists to kill innocent citizens...things like that. I think you get my drift. Can you help? I would greatly appreciate it. If not, that's cool, I understand you're probably quite occupied at this point! Thanks for your time!

Please post any solid info you may have for this fellow.

Pretty liberal State.... no class 3 like SBRs or suppressors allowed. Great fishing and pretty good hunting I guess. Lots of Agriculture and friendly folks as a general rule.

I could never live in Minneapolis ... too big. Lots of small towns around the city..... no idea of prices probably pricey.

Unless you're going to rural Minnesota where the people are some of the best in the world, don't go.

We've got one of the better carry laws in the country. There are almost no places that are off limits, and it is a "permit to carry", i.e. you can carry open or concealed. I of course would prefer not to need to seek the permission of my overlords to be able to protect myself effectively, but there are definitely much worse places to be.

I'd avoid residing in Hennepin county if at all possible (the county in which Minneapolis resides), but even it you cannot, there are plenty of decent places to live there.

While MN is definitely a liberal state, it is also mainly rural, with a strong hunting & fishing culture. Apart from the ridiculous 'no class 3' part, the gun laws are fairly liberal (in the good way), and there are more than enough pro-gun Democrats to keep it that way.

I'm not really hooked into the threeper scene here, so I cannot speak to that portion of your question directly...

I'm from the state and moving up that way. Dakota is right, it can be quite libtardish, but outstate is pretty nice. There are many like minded people here, but most don't put it out there. Traffic sucks around the metro area, and depending on where you are at in the cities, the hipster population is nauseating.

If possible, live in the suburbs. Also, do a map recon and figure out a good egress plan out of there if SHTF. Southern MN has some good terrain and northern MN has alot of forest land.

Mn is a shall issue state. Gun laws have a few quirks but all the same not bad. No registration, qoutas ect. I live here and like it... housing moderate, schools good. crime low. Outstate people armed to the the teeth. Metro armed to the teeth. Lottsa libs but when it comes to ur firearms rights they leave us alone...

The City will not be a good place to be when TSHTF and it won´t matter which City you want to talk about. If you have to go then have a PLAN to bug out Plan A,B,C,and then have a back up plan.and also have a place to go to afterwards.

If carry laws are your primary consideration, anyplace but Ramsey County (St. Paul) will do. Minneapolis PD is solidly anti-gun, but carry permits are issued by the sheriff, and in Hennepin he plays by the book. The only one who's playing games with his issuance policies is Fletcher, in Ramsey. He denies at three times the rate as any other sheriff in the state (and regularly loses on appeal).

Ditto what is said about the guns. It is much bettern for carry permits than inthe past. I would suggest the southern suberbs if you look to live in the metro area. Bloomington, Edina, maybe Burnsville. Minnetonka to the west is good too, but these places can be spendy.

I've lived in MN, enjoyed the hunting and fishing and outdoors recreation immensely. Summer is hot and humid, winter is long and cold, can be more bitter than AK. The people are decent, hard working folk, except for the younger crowd, which is absolutely abominable.

My wife and I traveled there this past October to bury her sister, my wife is from central MN. While visiting with family friends, someone asked her what she thought of the Obummer. She responded with words to the effect that he was the worst thing to happen to America since the Great Depression. The questioner then said, "oh, you must be a racist, then!" The guy was an old family friend, which is the only reason I didn't knock him on his butt. Gave him a piece of my mind, and we left the gathering, they in a stunned silence.

The folk up there are dyed in the wool Democrite Liberal Progressive Socialists. So, be warned!

Minnesota is also the 4th highest taxed state of the 50 states, with sin taxes through the roof. The only thing they've got going for them is Michelle Bachmann!

We wonders, yes we do, if any comm- enters besides myself currently live in MN...? I am in St. Paul. It and MPLS are two very different cities. St. Paul, which I prefer, seems like a very large small town. The downtown area is very small compared to MPLS. The latter is a real city, with a 'many tall buildings' downtown center. The U of M is in MPLS, the (very beautiful) Capitol building is in St. Paul. The Archbishop is in St. Paul. MPLS is very, very urban. The assertion that "denies at three times the rate as any other sheriff in the state" is, if I remember correctly, accurate, but somewhat spurious, 2% compared to 6%...Try going to http://twincitiescarry.com/forum/ for more viewpoints. The carry law is written so that businesses have the option to post signs on their doors,"such-and-such business bans guns". But if one enters such a place, and they ask a permit holder to leave, and permit holder refuses, it's a class 3 misdemeanor. Get three of those and kiss your permit goodbye. I ignore them and keep my shirttails out, or don't bother with such places. (Our favorite "...bans guns" sign is on a restaurant's front window, immediately below the red background with white lettering sign reading "Need Money? ATM Inside". Heh.
The state is infested with libs, progressives, DFL'ers (Democrat-Farm-Labor), though the current Republican Gov. candidate, Tom Emmer is a real Reaganite. To illustrate the stupidity of the opponent, Marg. Kelleher, our Archbishop asked her, when she both said, regarding her "Up the butt is marriage too" ideology, and her saying, "The legislature will decide this, not the voters", and hearing that silly phrase, "Same love, same rights" asked, "So a father can marry his own daughter?" (I heard the Archbishop himself tell this anecdote.) I seem to remember him saying her circuits crashed. What you might really look at is living in a district with decent representation. We like it here. It can get cold in the winter, and there can be lots of snow. Ice fishing is very popular, from local lakes to the big ones up north where houses stay on the ice from late Dec. through Feb-mid March. Hope this helps. I have no III info though.

The State income tax and property taxes are going to be pretty shocking compared to what your used to in Alaska. I moved from Alaska to Eden Prairie MN and wished I was back in Alaska instantly. I remember being colder in MN than I ever was in Alaska. If you can, stay in Alaska, it's truely one of the most special places on the planet.

I concur with the other posts, pretty liberal state, but rural areas are great. I live in Northfield, MN 40 mi south of Minneapolis. It is a small city 17,000. Townies are liberal(two colleges go figure)but surrounding areas are generally conservative and friendly. Join a gun club out of the Twin cities. The Appleseed project is pretty active around the state too and is a great way to meet like minded people.

I would stay in AK if it were me, but you got to make money.
I do not live in Min. but have heard that its musslim population is very high.
Might need a turbin or burka to blend in. :)

Minnesota's not a bad place to live if you can handle the cold. Seriously, the Twin Cities area is humid c-o-l-d.
Politically, the Twin Cities area is more conservative than the northern half of the state. CCW is a 'shall issue' unless you have a criminal background.
Threepers being Threepers, you'll have to dig them out due to OPSEC but we're a growing number. I've not heard of any "Absolved reading groups" but it shouldn't be difficult to create one.
The Po-Po aren't too bad- yet. Be sure to wear your seat belt cuz Nanny did decide it's a punishable offense with hefty $120 fine.
The people are friendly, for the most part. "Minnesota nice" ain't just an expression, but people are what we make them in our treatment of them.
Cost of living is lower than Alaska, but it's on the rise as in any other area of the country.
Your employer could send you to a lot of places not even close to as nice as MN.
If you enjoy hunting and fishing, MN is almost a paradise. There's much more to do for entertainment, as well, since the Twin Cities are the "cultural center" of the midwest.

A day does not pass that I do not find myself wishing I could return to Alaska. You really ought to stay there if you can.

If you are forced "outside" you may still have options. Sioux Falls, South Dakota has managed to preserve a friendly small-town feel and offers "big sky" hunting and fishing opportunities.

Once you travel east of the Mississippi though, Chicago's malign Mordor-like influence begins to make itself felt.

You can get an SBR, but no suppressors. Minnesota is a "permit to purchase" state. Dont blame me, happened while I was in FL. Huge Somolian population contributes to healthy Muslim numbers. Southern Suburbs trending towards rural are great. Stay out of Ramsey and Hennepin counties. Can carry in bars but BAC is restricted (like one drink for most folks) Minnesota nice is real, but it masks a deep passive-aggressiveness. Fishing, camping, hiking in the summer, snowmobiling, ice fishing, skiing, and drinking in the winter. I have lived in worse places(Mass.) and I have lived in better(Tenn.)but overall, Minnesota is a pretty alright state.

The twincities carry forum link is outdated - Joel decieded to hang up the forum admin hat. Try http://www.carryforum.com/forum/ as the replacement.

Except for 4 yrs in the Army - lived my life in MN. As noted by others the small towns are great - but nearly any town the size of St. Cloud has a sizeable gang problem. Great hunting, fishing and camping opportunities. A bit chilly in the winter and hot in Aug. but the late spring and fall days more then make up for it. I live on one end of the cities and commute through one downtown in the morning and the other in the evening - if you can work early/get out early then traffic isn't that bad.
You could move to worse states... But as noted - try to stay out of Hennipen and Ramsey county. Wright County is fairly close in and has a great sheriff that has understood the 2nd amendment a long time ago.

Thanks to all for your input and advice. It's all in the air for now. Considering rural outlying areas outside of the big city. I'll use this info to help make a decision. Thanks!

Thanks Mike, for helping me out in this way.
