NRA Calling for Hearings into “Fast and Furious”

NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox Calls for Expedited Hearings into BATFE Investigative Tactics

Wednesday, March 09, 2011

On March 9, NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox sent letters to key leaders in Congress calling for hearings to examine the firearms trafficking investigations tactics employed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Those tactics have allegedly allowed firearms to fall into the hands of Mexican criminal organizations, with the knowledge of the BATFE.

In the letters sent to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and Ranking Member, John Conyers (D-Mich.) and their counterparts in the U.S. Senate, Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Ranking Member Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), Cox wrote that the BATFE project “reportedly allowed over 2,000 firearms to be sold to individuals already linked to Mexican drug cartels. Many of those transactions were reported as suspicious by the licensed firearms dealers themselves, but BATFE reportedly encouraged them to proceed with these sales, which the dealers would otherwise have turned down.”

Cox also called on the committees to look into the BATFE responses to inquiries about these suspect programs, stating “Any investigation should also examine the responses by the BATFE and the Department of Justice to earlier congressional inquiries about the ‘Fast and Furious’ program.”

Better late than never.

The more orgs/news agencies/etc that pile on this thing, the better.

I DO NOT want to see the whistleblower agents bravery forgotten because this story loses traction and gets brushed under the rug.

Hilarious.....the hearings started today and NRA gets off its ass just long enough to demand hearings.

Too little, too late you bunch of has beens.

Proving NRA really does stand for "Not Relevant Anymore".

Not to be a grammar Nazi, but you left out the "h" in one of the words, and put two "c"s instead of one "c" and one "f" in another...

The NRA brings much needed financial and numerical strength to this uneven struggle.

I am glad to see them put in an appearance, even if it is dilatory and opportunistic.

My congress critters were politely ignoring my pleas for an investigation. It will be much harder for them to ignore the NRA's megaphone.

As David would say, "Any barstool in a fight."

I'll take the (very late) addition of the NRA to this side of the fight. Having an 800-pound gorilla (even if it is fat, lazy, and slow) on your side helps-if the opposition fears the gorilla. All of the NRA's numerous faults aside, you must admit that the opposition really DOES fear this gorilla...

Maybe. "Expedited hearings" can be an euphemism for "quick double-shuffle, Tyburn jig for a mid-level scapegoat or two, 'mistakes were made, we're very very sorry and promise never to do it again,' leaving the main culprits in place..."

...and enabling the Lairds to get back to their main business: declaring victory and resuming fundraising on the basis of the status quo ante, which has the advantage (to Chris and Wayne) of being the devil (grin, grin, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more) they know.

If it helps some of you to get to sleep at night to think that our opposition fears the NRA, good luck to you.

The NRA makes money every time our (not _their_) opposition tries running some new legislation past us, most of which the NRA has helped write (do your homework and you'll discover this is fact, not fancy.) Just as competing lawyers will get together to drag a lawsuit on a bit longer for more billable hours, NRA colludes with our opposition in order to stay viable and hit its members for some more money.

The NRA wouldn't have touched this with a ten-foot pole if Mike and David and Larry Pratt at GOA hadn't taken the ball and run with it, if CBS and some of the print media hadn't gotten on board.

The only folks who need to fear the NRA are those who care what happens to their dues and donations.
