A word to the wise is sufficient.

"It’s Tracking Your Every Move and You May Not Even Know."

Gotta love technology.

Now, IF you have one of these damned things (I do not) the only way that you can disable the tracking capability of them is to remove the battery, Turning them off does not cut it.

And so, if you know this, why in the world would you have one?

Think, practice and live OPSEC.

I generally only have the thing on me if I am going somewhere and expect to need to contact my wife or some other pressing need for real-time comm. That does not include trips to the range, gun shop and other places (titty bar? wink). Otherwise it is sitting somewhere in my house.

Thanks for the tip, idahobob. I was NOT aware that shutting it down left the location "service" intact. Fortunately, it's not hard to remove the battery from mine. Five years in strategic missiles made OPSEC 2nd nature.

Note: If you fly commercial, you are often at sufficient altitude to be out of contact with cell towers en route. I know this because of a call I took when doing cust svc for Verizon Wireless. Guy got hit for roaming charges (even though VZW doesn't HAVE roaming chgs for the most part) for the first call he made after landing each leg of his trip because the system got confused.

The microphone can be activated without you knowing.

The ability to do it is meant for emergencies, say an old person not answering the phone, so that sounds can be listened for. As we all know, most things can be abused.

Do not discuss anything private in the same room as a cell phone, best leave it on the table and go for a walk around the park to hold your conversation.

Word has it that some organizations are developing open-source, "freeware" phone operating systems that would supposedly be privacy-friendly.

Not sure of the details, or how much I'd trust it, but it's encouraging.

Tribe members should pay with cash for pre-paid phones to be used in case of emergencies.

No sense going without or removing the battery frequently. The Bad Guys will find other ways to get what they want. Far better to only do so when you REALLY need to. If they track you the REST of the time, so what? Work it right and they WON'T be able to do so when they most need to.
