A taxpayer funded criminal enterprise. The deal goes like this, or so I'm told by folks who have seen it in action:
TSA employees scanning bags turn up something they want to steal. In this case, Israeli pistols. They tag the bag with some mark that their confederate in the baggage process can easily identify out-of-sight of the cameras and public. After the items are removed from the bag, all routing marks are effaced from the bag and it is re-routed, in this case sent to LA -- a popular destination for NY TSA thievs' handiwork simply because it takes so long to get there. The thieves are never too greedy. Note that in this case the two "lost" bags both have weapons, but only one bag is pilfered -- the one with the most pistols, naturally. The merchandise is often handed off to a third-party at the airport, who sneaks it out in a personal bag. By the time the baggage arrives at the wrongly-forwarded airport, returned and the theft discovered, the merchandise is long gone from the airport. Who participates in scanning the bags originally? And who knows where all the security cameras, obvious and unobtrusive are?
You guessed it, the "transportation security" folks.
Your tax dollars at work.

Kind of a strange set of circumstances don't you think. Israeli bodyguards for hated head of State checking their weapons into the cargo hold. Plane is diverted and weapons turn up missing. HMMMMM Simple theft???
Something don't make a lot of sense to me. I keep thinking about the polish leadership being killed in an .... ahem .... accident in Russia, and now this incident.
But then I have been wearing my tinfoil a bit too much lately.
Me thinks this is more than simple theft. It was a message that we can take your arms away at anytime.
Since Israel gets most of their weapon systems from the US, it was a very pointed message. One the Obot could send without pissing off Jews like he did last time with the cold shoulder...

Under TSA rules the lock on baggage with firearms must be secure and you (The owner) must have the only set of keys.
Therefore the lock it self can not be a normal TSA compliant lock and will serve as the "Mark" that there are firearms in the bag.
One more reason not to fly.

Anon - That's incorrect. Under TSA rules the lock on the container holding firearms must be secure and you (the owner) must have the only set of keys (i.e. a non-TSA lock). The lock on the outside luggage containing the locked container can be a TSA compliant lock.
