Another threat to the global food supply.

Down under.

I hope that they can stay ahead of this with pesticides and insecticides. They have some that are really effective that turn to gas but are not viable for some locations. Aerial applications can cover huge tracts of land with todays technology low volume spraying.

The problem with locusts is they fly and this can be a problem for aircraft, as the leading edge of the wing starts losing it's lift when you get a bunch of bug spatter on them. It sort of disrupts the smooth airflow over the wing.

In western North America it'll be grasshoppers this year.

Wheat is down in price, so the markets aren't terribly concerned. Stock up anyway.

Exodus 10: "...they will cover the face of the earth so it cannot be seen. They will eat every tree growing in your fields. They will fill the houses of all those who serve you, something you fathers and fore fathers did not see the day they settled this land."

There you go, Concerned American.

And, The US feds are concerned about the fate of 7 Alaskan wolves.

It's a damn good thing the US government isn't, at least presently, dictating to the Aussies as to how to handle its locust problem.

You can eat some locusts. It is said that the preferred way is to pickle them.
Yuk!

I'm thinking huge fans that suck the locusts into containers like a big vacuum cleaner. Send the locusts to a roaster and ship them to Asia where they are delicacies. Hey, I would try them. Ship some of those toasted tastys to the U.S. If life gives you lemons make lemonaid. If I remember correctly fast growing fresh water fish like tilapia love these little bugs and Australia could use them to produce tons and tons of talapia fillets. Come-on folks, a little Yankee ingenuity please.

Several large flocks of hungry seagulls did the trick for the Mormons back in the day.
But we should wait for our government to conduct its environmental impact studies first. After all that process is working out so well down in the gulf even as we speak.
On that topic, Huckabee had over a dozen scientists, engineers, and just plain business people on with simple environmentally neutral methods for removing oil from water, none of which seem to be of any interest to BP or our government. I know the saying is to never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence, but I still can't help wondering who exactly would benefit from a protracted crisis on the gulf coast. Certainly not the residents or small business owners there, but someone would appear to be dragging their collective feet for some reason.

So glad I found this blog. Maybe there IS still hope that we can save our country from the fascists after all.....

Happy D and Anonymous have said what I was going to say. Actually, Anonymous primarily. They are edible. If those locals are hungry, eat bugs. Not the whole thing, just the tail end. Twist carefully, and the excretory tract stays attached to the abdomen. Fry or roast.
Bwahahaha! Sorry, to be serious this could well be a problem for wheat stocks. Mind you, if we could dispose of the ecoloons, we could irrigate the valley in California and grow and sell it ourselves. But the idiot at 1600, and those of his ilk, want this nation to fail.

cmblake, you should be serious. Animal foods are much healthier for you than plants. Wheat is especially toxic.

I just drove through central Aus in the last few months (twice) and I can say they where "biblical" in numbers , however the real problem starts in spring (southern hemisphere) when the eggs (hoppers) hatch and the mice begin to feed . Hmmm!

There is an historical saying in Australia's young (second) culture, that "what happens in America is miirrored in Australia".

You may also be aware Australia was diss-armed in 96 (gun buy back). Lone gunman Martyn Bryant shot 36 folks in the head at the busy Broad Arrow cafe in Tasmania "from the hip " .
A purchase strongly supported by both party's (left right) fertilised by the radical centralised greens and sponsored by none other than George Soros's "anti gun lobby" , who's head office was in Tasmania's capital "Hobart"?

Sorry Mike I cant remember the name of the parasite toe rag who now works for the UN . I posted her name here several months ago , but I refer to her as a "toe rag".

All the footage you see on the "magic box" and the net , of weapons being destroyed (millions) comes from yours truly.

What is it they say in the states "Oh Hell No " , well here in the land of the "never never" we say

"YUH BLOODY JOKIN"

Just one last thing , I'd like to ask a favour from the 3prs , when you start to dispatch your political "foes" could you start at the "HEAD" first!
