Changing over my email address.

One of the measures that must be taken to kill this infernal virus that has taken over my email is to change addresses. I will be phasing out AOL and closing my account over the next month. My new email address is SamAdams1775 AT att DOT net.

I will miss GeorgeMason1776. Next to Sam Adams, he was my favorite Founder.

A pox upon all spammers/hackers who plague honest net folk. Don't they know that tyrannical government agencies should be their main meat?

A pox on AOL, among others.

As to spammers and address-hijackers, back in Brooklyn we had a way of dealing with such:

Nail their kneecaps to the ceiling.

I recently received an email from your George Mason address. When I opened it I discovered t to be some sort of spam...then remembered you said something about being hacked.

How do you know the hackers were not fedgov operatives?

George Mason may be one of your favorite founders. But a Virginia University buy that name bans guns on campus.

http://www.annarbor.com/news/are-campus-gun-policies-unconstitutional-debate-on-campus-gun-bills-continues/

The University is 'tax payer supported' yet the rights of students are being infringed -they remain defenseless. After Virginia Tech shootings, where police priorities were 'to establish a perimeter' rather than 'to protect and serve', 31 minutes passed before they confronted the shooter. When seconds count...
Count on the University to endanger their students and push their 'hopium'.

And the University is named 'George Mason University'. Sad. They would toss him out of the school, rather than acknowledge his beliefs. Maybe the school should be renamed 'Rachel Corrie University'.

Mike;
You really need to look at using a firewall pc. Take a look at this.

http://www.smoothwall.org/

It will give you a mail proxy to capture and remove crap mail before it even gets to your home system. All it takes is an older pc you dont use anymore and one or two nic cards. If you can set up email you can do this install easily.
It will keep your home pc much more secure and cleaner.

Sigh. Email address changes are a "spam-itic" fact of life.

Since we'll probably be losing all e-com anyway, get used to runners, dead-man drops, and passenger pigeons.

Now just WHERE did I stash my vintage heliograph?

Sadly no. Many are to young to have learned the difference between freedom and liberty. (See Ben Franklin).

I once heard of a young communist that grew up. So as they grow up we shall benefit. So shall Honest folks.

Well, ya could use GeorgeMason1776 with a different ISP.... perhaps someone local.

"Since we'll probably be losing all e-com anyway"

I get so tired of the "after the crash we'll all be using horse-drawn computers" claim. Check out the used oscilloscope and electronic test equipment market on ebay. Oscilloscopes that were the cream of the American crop 20, 30, 40 years ago and cost more than a new automobile are now selling for five hundred dollars. These are textbook prices, and any college student in a relevant engineering field can now afford full pro equipment. Some older models were designed from such general purpose parts that replacements can be fashioned from just about anything. For the right models there is a large community keeping them running. Let me translate this to automotive terms: How much would have to be destroyed to deny Americans the ability to keep classic American automobiles running? Even the Cuban government failed to achieve this.

Even as old American oscilloscope iron is conserved, newly manufactured equipment is imported from China, Hong Kong, and Korea in competition with it. Sometimes it's better to send the VW Bug to the crusher and get a new car that works, a new model that works so well the manufacturer offers a 100,000+ mile warranty on each one. Hey, they're both cheap, everybody can do both approaches at once. Keep an easily repairable one as a hobby, and drive an efficient reliable one everyday.

And Windows? That's a 1970's Detroit car. It can't be reworked to operate well because everything is crap, all the way through. Send it to the crusher.

Mike,

what you just did will ENSURE you get more spam and give you the same problems again.

The dirtbags have "bots" that crawl the 'net looking for e-mail addresses.

There are 2 easy ways around it - either use an image of the e-mail address (instead of text) or write it like "some.person-AT-AOHell-dot-com"...

I'm sure there must be dozens of threepers who (like me) have the skills to help!

PS:

I'm nearly positive that your machine is not the problem!

With your address on the 'net like it is, anyone could be sending mail CLAIMING to be from you!

YOU get the "failure" and other replies because it's YOUR address.

Imagine: I send SPAM claiming to be from "bill.gates@microsoft.com". You don't like the SPAM and decide to write back to chew "me" out.

WHO WILL GET YOUR MESSAGE??!!

Bill will.

Think about it...

PS: I have 20 years in IT, most of it building and maintaining e-mail systems including the second-largest MS Exchange Org in the entire world...
