While Hauer broke multiple laws—including apparent felonies, such as assault with a deadly weapon—he wasn’t fired, demoted, or even punished. Instead, Governor Andrew Cuomo unilaterally exempted Hauer from the law after the fact:

This is no small thing, to restore a republic after it has fallen into corruption. I have studied history for years and I cannot recall it ever happening. It may be that our task is impossible.
