Lousy day yesterday, lousier night.

In addition to the chemo ass-kicking, I very literally got blindsided while helping load some shelving for delivery to a friend. The warehouseman who was helping us was in a hurry, and backing up without looking as I attempted to walk around him, he knocked me ass over appetite onto the concrete. (It was like being struck by a swinging side of beef.) Hit with my entire weight on my left kneecap, then flipped back and smashed my head. The kneecap is going to give continuing trouble, I can tell, (I can walk on it if I keep it absolutely straight but it will not flex without giving way and transmitting excruciating pain) but I skipped going to the ER in the interest of the co-pay. My head merely has a knot raised on it, which is probably karma. I am committed to deliver the shelving this morning, so it will be afternoon before I get back to post. Sorry.

Mike, this reads like the type of negligence clusterfuck that would not be tolerated on a range, and you have years of professional warehouse management experience to know had this happened on your watch, someone would have been written up for safety violations at a minimum. Probably two someones. It all points to you not being physically capable of helping someone with such a trivial "need" as delivering shelving and have no damn business trying.

I feel like screaming "What the FUCK were you thinking?" and then yelling "Screw the co-pay, make sure you're not maimed for life and don't have a damn concussion." Putting off professional evaluation of injuries like you describe is simply pig-headed, and being penny-wise/pound foolish has the potential for a much more expensive clean up session. For God's sake, think of Rosey.

And doesn't the warehouse have insurance? I'm just thinking of all the times I've been part of forklift operations as either operator or support and I've never seen anyone come close to slamming into someone -- or being slammed into.

A "friend" would not let you help deliver shelving, let alone ask you to, no matter how great their "need." Someone else would have to help, they'd have to pay or they'd have to do without the damn shelving. I don't care if it's for an impoverished quadriplegic old widow lady who needs the shelves to store orphan food, someone besides Mike Vanderboegh has to do the physical labor.

I was going to say "Sorry for the scold" but I'm not. Sometimes you can be the smartest guy I know. Other times, well, I just hope you're all right.

Mike,

You're a human Weeble - you may wooble, but you never fall down; at least not for very long.

Take care, Brother, please.

I would think that a nice little lawsuit would be in order...at least for medical expenses.

I kinda would have said some of what David Codrea said, but hopefully more gently.

Prayers for your recovery and safety, and also that God grant you wisdom not to needlessly injure yourself doing things you should know well you physically cannot do safely.

Let each of us who does not occasionally deserve a knock on the noggin cast the first bookshelf.

Hope you're ok brother. The knee obviously sounds like more the problem.

Please take care, Mike.

The civilized world (what's left of it....) needs you!

@David_Codrea great remarks of yours to Mike! A friend's concern was well said. Perhaps Mike has not yet learned what us older (not wiser, just more experience) know that the mind is willing but the body, not so much....

Mike,
I'm your age (65 next week), and I work in a metal shop warehouse. My head is on a swivel 8-9 hours a day. I do it because I have to; welfare being anathema to me. You, on the other hand, have a Good Samaritan aspect to you that, while very admirable, should be tempered with common sense. Think, okay?

You are needed by many people to continue the work God has called you to, not to be the ramrod of a very physical mission. Think!

Okay, enough preaching. Domino says to keep Chiky Stix compresses on both head and knee. She swears it will help. Of course, this is the same dog that swears that she never, ever stole any Bushmills. Personally, I think you'd be better off with a shot of the good stuff. Domino agrees, and she says she'll gladly take any unused Chiky Stix off your hands. For free, of course...

Take care!

Mike........your age also, and had a similar fall 3 years ago, landing square on my kneecap. Mis-diagnosed as a slight tear,, after 8 months another Doc realized it was a severed quadracep (sp) tendon. If so it WILL NOT repair itself and without re-attachment You will need crutches or a walker forever.
Screw the copay, we'll take up a collection.

Mike,

What David Codrea said!

PLEASE get medically checked out! If you were at a business, there must be liability insurance to cover your being knocked down and injured by an employee. Make them use it to cover all of your medical expenses.

Praying you will feel better soon,

Nancy

Never go to ER .. wait for a urgent care center the next business day -- you'll get treated faster. Unless you got shot during your robbery attempt you never get seen a night ... no good deed goes unpunished ... get better soon.

mike, you can't tell me there are no people near you who can do errands for an old man that has done so much for the rest of us. I wish I was closer I'd give you a few hours of my time every week, but the travel time from NH would be..well..a bit prohibitive.
