That battle in NRA heaven thing. Et tu, Brute?
How the NRA changes leadership at the top.
Some things that have happened so far:
Bob Dowlut retired as General Counsel. That much was no surprise. What was a surprise was that John Frazer (formerly ILA research director, who'd gone into private practice about a year ago) was named as his replacement. Dowlut was a LaPierre loyalist. Frazer is known as a Cox loyalist.
Chuck Cunningham (director of State Affairs) was made "senior advisor" i.e., put out to pasture. Cunningham is a LaPierre loyalist.
James Jay Baker, director of Federal Affairs, was made acting director of State affairs. In other words he was both demoted and, at the moment, place-holding for someone else. Baker is a LaPierre man.
The new head of Federal Affairs is said to be a Cox man.
Inside sources in Fairfax say that it is unlikely that these changes are performance related. All of those replaced were competent and successful. BUT, all were very loyal to LaPierre.
So, the question that is being asked behind the scenes is this: Is LaPierre being stabbed in the back by his protege Cox, just like LaPierre stabbed his mentor Neal Knox in the back in 1997? It should be a very interesting convention coming up.

It's only interesting from a soap opera aspect. All that's being decided here is who gets the money and who gets to control who else gets the money. Nobody in this "stand and fight" battle cares one bit about joe six packs right to own or right to carry. The corruption is so deep, so engrained that the folks mentioned are lost in their attempt to control others.
The NRA has undoubtedly become the very thing it claims to oppose. Sending the NRA money is a fools errand and contributes to the problem. Stop contributing to the problem and start contributing to the solution.
Buy firearms instead. Carry firearms instead. Exercise your rights - yourself. It's the BEST way to defend them.
Dutchman, Is there a real difference between Cox and LaPierre other than age? Both seem pretty good at DC lobbying and pretty bad at paying attention to what is going on out in fly over country. What are the nuances in this drama?
Where's Uncle Ted in all this? Has he been assimilated by the Borg? He's on the board, carries a popular following regarding the 2nd Amend.
What the little birdie say about that?
So, was muslim loving Grover Norquist re-elected?
At the end of the day, it makes little difference which one throws gun owners under the bus of 'compromise'.
The people on the board have no influence on NRA. They're something between figureheads and window dressing. The real power is in the hands of the executive director, and the full-time staff (not only of NRA but of the nominally separate direct-mail empire that more or less controls the Association).
