Praxis: How to get Internet access when your government shuts it down.

Interesting link with micro-level practical steps. Better macro-level solution: Begin shooting the responsible politician-tyrants until the survivors turn it back on.

I'm a ham operator and one of my friends has experience setting up a mesh network. Maybe we should hold a class or two?

A Fidonet system would be the way to go. It's point / node configuration makes it flexible, scalable and private. With cellphones and free long distance there would be little cost above the cell modem and very portable. I did it for several years on the land line system and it worked very well (once you found the init string your modem liked) using a DOS based program called "Frontdoor."

you might wish to take a look at the current state of FidoNet. Some friends and I looked earlier this year and it was in what could only be called a state of disrepair.

http://hsmm-mesh.org also looks to be quiescent.

https://openwrt.org seems active, and looks interesting for those interested in banging on router hardware.

If you have decent and actively supported solutions I bet a lot of people would love to hear about them.
