The fever slowly abates. Doug Rink reports on Atlanta Gun Show.

The only loaded ammunition still in shortage status is .22LR but the average price for 500 rounds has dropped to $40-55 depending on the specific brand and type. Private sellers still seemed to be dominating this niche of the ammo market. As far as is known, the government is not in this part of the market in any significant way so the persistence of the .22LR shortage is a signal indicator that the ammo buying habits of a big swath of the American public has changed toward getting and holding significant quantities of this primary caliber.

Giffen Goods?

When ammo prices go up, consumption of inferior .22LR ammo rises.

After all, EVERYONE KNOWS that 22LR is the currency of the future - who wants to be broke :)

Here's the secret of getting .22 ammo at Walmart.

Walmart has an iPhone app that tells you which Walmart will be getting .22 ammo in ahead of time. To get in on these supplies, (and beat the private .22 ammo price gougers at their own game), you have to be willing to get up very early and be at your local Walmart when they start selling ammo at 7 am. They sell out pretty fast, so don't be late. But, don't bother going until the app says 'availability unknown' and not 'out of stock'.

Yeh...there's more to it than that. Part of the fun is figuring out how to use the app. Besides, why should I make it that easy. Nobody was around to show me how the app worked. But since a figured it out, I have stock piled thousands of rounds of Federal, Winchester and Remington .22LR ammo.
