Well, I guess that leaves me out.

"Bill to protect journalists clears Senate panel: The Senate Judiciary Committee approves a media shield bill to keep 'real reporters' from having to testify on their work."
The final hurdle for the Judiciary Committee was defining who is a journalist in the digital era.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) insisted on limiting the legal protection to "real reporters" and not, she said, a 17-year-old with his own website.
"I can't support it if everyone who has a blog has a special privilege … or if Edward Snowden were to sit down and write this stuff, he would have a privilege. I'm not going to go there," she said.
Feinstein introduced an amendment that defines a "covered journalist" as someone who gathers and reports news for "an entity or service that disseminates news and information." The definition includes freelancers, part-timers and student journalists, and it permits a judge to go further and extend the protections to any "legitimate news-gathering activities."

Guess they got tired of stomping on the 2nd Amendment and decided to go after the 1st. Variety is the spice of life.

Ha ha ha ha, the "journalists" who decide to acquiesce to Feinstein's "legal definition" have just signed their own death warrants.

Expect a Ministry Of Journalism overseen by appointed bureaucrats, ever-shifting rules and of course, taxation. Qualifying for federal license to practice "journalism" will be a hoot!

Lets see now, since many are paid for each word, it would only be appropriate to impose the tax per word also as well as on gross income.

Somewhere there's going to be the Ministry Of Truth to "independently" investigate "journalistic" musings which would also be overseen and regulated by appointed bureaucrats.

Oh, this is rich. Yes, by all means, let the esteemed Senator Feinstein meddle in journalistic licensure.

I see irrelevancy looming large dead ahead.

Soooooo...... BIG media is protected, anybody else, not so much.

Sounds like a big government solution to an information control, propaganda and indoctrination problem, doesn't it?

That's because it is!

Their intentions could not be more clear, protect their friends, attack everyone else using all the tools of government to do so.

This is an illegitimate government, empowered by a Marxist media.

It get worse from here folks.

"real journalists" means "liberals".

"legitimate news-gathering activities" means "Leftist Media".

So, Fonebone and the rest of those fuckers are going to protect free speech......but only if you're "approved" to have protection.

How fucking rich is that??

I'll tell you right now.....the bill violates the 1st Amendment, and the Equal Protection clause under the 14th.

"Congress shall make no law..."

Wouldn't it have been ever so much better had they just dropped a period right there?

"Authorized journalists" is about to go from being mocking slang to government sanctioned reality.

I see this as just another sledgehammer-like blow to the nation's framework established by the Founders.

They can play their games, crown their media princes, if they choose. The writings of patriots will not be deterred.

If politicians had to be real "statesmen" . . .

Bye-bye Feinstein! jb

The next step is to have the government "license" Journalists or have an "approved journalist" requirement.
If this bill was restricted to THE PRACTICE OF JOURNALISM, not the individuals who would be "Protected" it would probably pass Constitutional muster. I think the ELITES in journalism will be for the bill as written because it makes them more special than us plebes.

Time place manner assault upon our Constitution WILL allow them (Durbin and crew) to go forward with this fiasco. We have to call it what it IS. A TITLE OF NOBILITY.

No RIGHT is unlimited or absolute. So they tell us. EVEN THOUGH the Constitution says clearly that CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW and SHALL MOT BE INFRINGED. Yet, government has NO LIMITATIONS AT ALL because 9 unelected robed kings say so? Kings who depend on the other two branches for their paychecks?

Got militia?

Well, he'll. Git yerself a business license and start disseminating. That makes you a journalist. As a journalist, you may also opine.

This is to allow them to seek sources, and bust leakers. Fuck them. Do as you please and claim your sources are anonymous deep throat practitioners that only hand over the good while you are otherwise occupied. :)

Again I say, fuck them.

There is plenty of rope to go around.

Just a clearer defining line between the Ministry of Propaganda and the rest of us, gang. They will only be accomplishing the acceleration of their irrelevance.
