They were all REALLY repetitive about “We will follow the law.” The only one there that came close to saying what needed to be said was a deputy whose sheriff couldn’t make it, though I don’t recall exactly what county he said he was from. He said that he didn’t think his sheriff would obey an order to confiscate guns. He also was the only one to state that the second amendment wasn’t about hunting. He stopped short of saying what it actually is for. The rest of them regaled us with their campaign stump speech stories about their hunting rifles and shotguns.
The were all repeatedly asked about what they would do if the order came down. They repeatedly refused to answer it.
As Sheriff of Pine County [MN], it is important for residents to know my position as it relates to the SecondAmendment to the Constitution of the United States.
In the past week I have had several requests andone meeting on this matter. Normally I attempt to remain neutral on matters of politics but this issuetranscends political division and I feel it appropriate to state my position.
I believe that the right to keep and bear firearms is fundamental to our individual freedom and that firearms are a part of life in our county.
The Federal Government has a constitutional role in the governance of our republic but the United States of America is a democratic republic of individualsovereign states. Each state has the absolute right to establish laws, within the confines of theconstitution which is the supreme law of this republic, to regulate behavior.
As Sheriff, I swore an oath to follow the Constitution of the United States and to enforce the laws of theState of Minnesota.
I believe current state law is sufficient to protect the public safety while providingindividuals the right to keep and bear arms.
If the State of Minnesota desires to change current law, then it must do so through the legitimate processof legislation.
In my opinion it is a moral sin to erode freedom through obscure regulation andadministrative rules. I believe this is also true for both State and Federal Government.
I do not believe the Federal Government or any individual in the Federal Government has the right to dictate to the states, counties or municipalities any mandate, regulation or administrative rule thatviolates the United States Constitution or it various amendments.
I would view any such mandate, regulation or administrative rule illegal and refuse to carry it out.
The one Sheriff summed it up. He didn't have enough deputies to handle the number of people he had there, much less go door to do. They know the score.
Like Ron White said, "I didn't know how many of em it was going to take to kick my ass... but I knew how many they were going to bring."
The 2nd Amendment is an enumeration of God Given Inalienable Rights. The Right to keep and bear arms can not be taken, or given away, it is inherent to being a Free Man, or Woman.
I don't care on bit what scribbling they put on paper, they do not and can not limit a man's right of selfdefense against others, or his own government.
If these Sheriffs do not agree on that, then there needs to be a new election for Sheriff.
You have to understand something gentle people, these law enforcement types will very shortly be receiving their ammunition from uncle sugar because he's the one that bought all of it up!
What seemed to be repeated at least a couple of times at this MCMM meeting is that the Sheriffs themselves would not participate in a confiscation effort. I think it was the Sheriff of Franklin (Jones?) who said that he would resign before ordering his deputies to do it. However, what we were looking for was to see if they had the brass cojones to say they would also stand between us and Feds should it come to that. Trying to get them to be clear on what they would do was also like nailing Jello to the wall. Will they, in cases when someone is stopped in their car or visited at their home, use the opportunity to ask about guns? Saying you won't participate in a blanket effort that is specifically a confiscation sweep is one thing. But what about finding some 'banned' item on people in the course of other business?
The lawyer was...a lawyer. And there is most definitely one aspect of THE LAW that he was oblivious to. Mike has written about it several times here. The Law of Unintended Consequences.
Have fun with your ostensible idea about the law, Messrs. Sheriffs. Your damn lawyer isn't going to be able to help you with the unintended kind.
Remember Braveheart, where Robert the Bruce was going to back up William Wallace, but when it came down to the actual battle, he had already sold him out? We can only hope the Sheriffs will stand with the Constitution, and the People, but it would not hurt to be prepared for plan #2, just in case!

Mike here's an interesting analysis. Don't know how accurate, but it's amusing to read.

Sheriff Jerry Jones advised the crowd to "take their passions to lawmakers." Yep, that works every time.
Same fudge from the governor of Georgia, Natahn Deal, career politician. ANd he commands our GSHP.
Fence sitting. Both sides of mouth.
Mindless 'following of orders'. Good Nazi's. No need for intellect or conscience or (they think) personal consequences.
They forget that they live amongst their own citizens.
Remember these names if and when the killing starts.

Robin K. Cole Pine County [MN] Sheriff"
Cheers,

Hey Tino,
Let's see if Sheriff Cole's attitude catches on in Hennepin County. Somehow, I'm thinking it will be tougher sledding there.

Making sense now?
