At least Gen. Giap, while ruthlessly wasting whole regiments of his army, stood for something. I never could figure out what McCain stood for. Hopefully soon, he will reunite with Giap, in the Great Collective in the Sky.
I have no use for McCain, but I will observe that most military folks who have been in direct combat have far more respect for their enemy than for the politicians who sent them.
Wish the VC had kept the bastard; he would undoubtedly have served them well, what with his chameleon-like adaptability to kneel before whatever power offers him the best advantage.

But on the battlefield we kicked their sorry asses every time we came up against them. So much so that, long afterwards, Giap hisself said they had run out of troops after Tet 68 and thought about throwing in the towel until Uncle Walter Cronkite, commie that he provably was, said we had LOST Tet and therefore lost the war.
With OUR media scum on HIS side, Giap decided to wait until our own media did what HE was incapable of doing: beating MY BROTHERS on the battlefield. Only this time the field of battle was in the halls of congress.
Geoff and DC: any truth to the rumor that McLame was more like a Tom Cruise character than a military officer, and got himself shot down for being a hotdog who thought rules didn't apply to him, even the rules that were intended to keep his ass from being shot up by AA guns?
I have no idea what sort of pilot he was, but I strongly suspect only the position of his daddy, Vice Admiral McCain, kept him in the navy. Daddy was ComPacFlt about the time junior got shot down, IIRC. Special treatment was offered him on that account, and some prisoner accounts indicate it was not declined.
One of the core principles of tactics is that if your allow your adversary to select and prepare the field of engagement you will find yourself at a profound disadvantage.
While our forces were in the southeast asian jungles fighting the VC, NVA, and Khmer Rouge, with side trips into winning the hearts and minds yada yada yada, others were at work in America's living rooms winning the hearts and minds of the American People.
We did not lose in southeast asia. The decisive engagement was being fought elsewhere. We lost right here at home.
