I have done some experimenting with horses in Dakota territory. They work alright and if you are traveling light you can ride .... travel heavy you either need 2 or you walk. Without a pack saddle and trying to improvise it takes a lot of experimenting to get a load to stay put... but it can be done. Don't forget your light ropes and bring plenty.

A good example of the kind of terrain to use pack animals is the Chiricahua Hills in Eastern Arizona and Western New Mexico.
