100 years from now, in the dim light of history - Obama could be seen as a defender of freedom. Who cares what laws got passed? He got millions of guns into the hands of the people. Which is more meaningful? :-)
You are a pretty sharp guy. Maybe you have an inkling about something I had an epiphany regarding American's arming themselves in defense from the psychopaths and their regime running things.
Has it occurred to you most of the disarmament of citizens is on the state and local level. That this has taken place in strategic places, both politically and tactically. Have you noted a unique exception to the violation of natural and constitutional law, where with a stroke of his pen the emperor and his ilk could bypass the rule of law, as they have done with wonton willfulness, on every issue and rule of law imaginable, with the exception of the 2nd Amendment, but have not?
Well got to pondering on not why, but what for?
And the epiphany that came to me is total disarmament is too difficult in this republic. So like any statist worth their salt and title, maybe they are thinking plan B. And all good statists have multiple uses for every crisis as a means they create, and maybe they have a whopper of a crisis where with all these fine rifles and ammo our perfumed mandarins have so graciously permitted us to possess, could come to good use, you know like never waste the opportunity to do what you could normally get away with?

To get to the point of all this, take the divisive and divided nature of the fabric of our culture today, create millions of jobless, many millions living by a thread and gorging themselves of free shit of the productive, bankrupt the wealthiest nation the world has witnessed, allow 15 million brown people invade this republic, then throw in a nice little deadly pandemic with no cure but death or a terrible debilitating suffering, just throw everyone under the bus, quarantine strategic areas, keep food water medicine and energy from crossing these zones, step back and let everyone do your dirty work for you. Save all your sycophants leg breakers thugs and secret police for when the bloodletting has run its course. Then you can bring in your "humanitarian aid and foreign peace keepers" to eliminate the survivors who are useless or a threat to your power, divvy up the spoils and become king for life.

In response to Matt Bracken Was Right, I have to say, I have occasionally gotten the odd impression that key figures in the gun-hating business (ie Bloomie) are so incompetent that it's hard to believe they're really trying.
For example, it's certainly understood by now that talking about gun control causes a spike in gun and ammo sales. ...and yet they just keep doing it.
So let's suppose for the sake of argument that some at the top have an idea that they can stir up a brew of heavily-armed sectarian hatred in this country, then light it off, hide away for a while until it burns out, then pop back up out of their hidey-holes and party forevermore in the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
While it seems unlikely, it's not far off from what we can see them doing elsewhere in the world, with no apparent concern for blowback.
