Guns & Ammo Ranks the Best States for Gun Owners (and why) in 2013

Interesting list.

Having lived in both states, I would not rate NC higher than Virginia. Generally speaking, Va. is friendlier to gun ownership, especially open carry. For example, Va. does not have the pistol purchase requirement (of racist origins) that NC still clings to. Even Michigan has eliminated this Jim Crow relic. Maybe NC is easier on Class III and that's what swayed the editors; I wouldn't know about that aspect of state law.

KY = #5 :-)

Open carried the other day in Kroger, of all places. Nobody even batted an eye.

I knew there was a reason I left the PR Illinois...

This is probably pretty good ranking as far as "state law" is concerned. I have to think, however, that the attitude of the people in general is just as important, and maybe more so. State law is actually easier to change than the customs and thinking of the population.

Add to that the "only one" attitude of the police, regardless of the state law, and there are plenty of potential problems.

I can go openly armed into any business, bank, the courthouse, city hall, absolutely anywhere except the USPS (or posted private property - if there were any outside of Cheyenne and Laramie) here in Wyoming, and nobody pays any attention except, perhaps, to ask me what I'm carrying. I suspect that is not true in Arizona with all the hoplophobes there from Calif.

I see the article was written in March. Alabama now is definitely a shall issue CCW state, so the G&A score should be better now, along with the fact that no permit is required for open carry now.

MamaLiberty....

I live in Phx....you can carry anywhere here. No one really cares. Some people stare, but that's the extent of it.

Anywhere in Phx that's not posted that is....

Sorry...should have clarified.

Mama Liberty,
Better get a grip on state law, I had my pocket knife taken away in Casper at the court house last month. Was going in to check some old property records and the 3 cops(Natrona County)locked our stuff up in a wall locker, after going thru the metal detector. Glad I left my pistol in the truck. They did play bully with us a bit, especially the woman cop. The city cops seem to be jerks/Nazis, while the smaller County Sheriffs deputies don't care too much. Riverton and Jackson cops aren't too nice either.
Be careful, not all are on our side.

I cannot believe AK is not #1. Open carry, CC, whatever carry, no permit required. Castle doctrine, stand your ground, etc.

The state law has not one single word in it regarding open carry. ZERO. The attitude of the "police" in any area can certainly be a problem, but in Wyoming it has nothing to do with state law. And we don't have "metal detectors" here anywhere that I'm aware of. :)

Sorry you had that experience in Casper... I've only been there a few times and have no desire to go back, though I have friends there who OC all the time.

I have carried openly in Cheyenne. Big truck stop just off the freeway. I stopped to get gas and coffee. Had a conversation with some cops inside. They were not aware of the "legality" of OC in Wyoming, so we did a little gentle education, but they didn't offer to hassle me and were very nice.

Come up to the NE corner. I have never seen a "no guns" sign here - though if I saw one I'd certainly honor it. They obviously wouldn't want my business or my money.

Years ago, someone (tourist probably) called the city police when I was in the Dollar Store. What would you call it? Old woman with a gun? LOL

They came and talked to me, then left with smiles after I invited them to my regular shooting sessions at the gun club. No problem whatsoever with the big black .45 on my hip - just curiosity. The manager of the store apologized profusely for the inconvenience! He didn't make the call.

ML,
I went to Newcastle after we left the Casper courthouse. Being on college business, I wasn't open carrying but had a great time there. Really liked the Italian restaurant, almost got washed away by the thunderstorms that evening. Was on a quick archaeology trip up that way, headed back to Lander the next day after a visit to the museum.
