David Codrea: Secession furor could pose unintended consequences for gun owners

David has an excellent point.
Among the enumerated disqualifying triggers in U.S. Code rendering one a prohibited person, forbidden by federal law to own a gun, is someone “who, having been a citizen of the United States, has renounced his citizenship.”
“I don’t want my name on any lists” is a familiar, albeit ironic and lame excuse some gun owners give for not engaging in activism, as if Americans in general and gun owners in particular are not already on more lists than they could imagine. In this case, the slackers may have a point, depending on how a particular document is worded, and noting who maintains the “We the People” petition site.
UPDATE: Some are calling my attention to the formal citizenship renunciation protocol for the United States. This column was intended to show the absurdity of prohibitions on supposedly unalienable rights for non-violent actions, and also to illustrate an apparent paradox as it relates to freedom of political expression. The bottom line is, if anyone actually tries secession, they'd better be able to back it up, or having U.S. Code pulled on them will be the least of their worries.

the answer to the last is simple...anyone state that secedes is no longer bound by US law therefore. what the U.S. government thinks no longer matters a damn.

First of all, the rights enumerated in the Constitution are rights recognized as PRE-existing the formation of the United States, Inc, and any derivation therof, before the Constitution brought that corporation into being,

Secondly, the rights PROTECTED by the Constitution and Bill of rights, are recognized under the Articles of the Confederation - which are STILL IN EFFECT - supplanted only by expedience under the Constitution FOR the United States, not the Constitution OF the United States, which was formalized and enacted in 1871 whose regulations and statutes apply ONLY to the District of Columbia. The States are separate Nations - foreign to the United States. The rights recognized by the 10th Amendment are sacrosanct - NOT annulable by any statutory law or regulation.

David,

Good point but there are people like Trumka, Hoffa, John Kerry, Francis Fox Piven, Anita Dunn, Van Jones, Soros, among others, who have actually called for and endorsed a violnt overthrow of the USG.

In fact, the Democrats endorsed the Occupiers who again, advocated for a violent overthrow of the USG.

Before they come for those on "We the People," I'd expect the line ahead of us to have the above named individuals waiting for their trial.

BTW, I'm already on their lists have self-reported on Attack Watch.

It is truly amazing how fast the petition for Texas has grown. I would check it every few hours to see how many were signing the petition. Then SHAZAM, the link at whitehouse.gov made it a bit more difficult to even find the petitions. Now, I am not one of those "conspiracy theorists" but when the access to a petition suddenly becomes a bit more difficult to find makes me a bit more interested. Somehow I seem to think that "Barak the Magic Negro" does NOT want to hear the news that he is neither loved nor appreciated brings a smile to my face. I do not think that the Citizens of the USA do not embrace the Socialism that O'Bummer favors nor will they stand for it. I guess that only time will tell and I can only Hope an Pray that this Nation survives this Clown in the Whitehouse.

Written as a legislative knee-jerk to the actions of Lee Harvey Oswald. Barn door / horse thinking.

I will no longer fly the Gadsen Flag to signify my discontent with the government. I am now flying the "Bonnie Blue Flag".

Well, I am a conspiracy theorist and I can tell you, it's no longer a theory.

I signed. I don't worry about any repercussions. If they decide to arrest all the petition signers, we are at war anyway. It's equivalent to an executive statement to round up all the guns.
