Not impressed with throwing more lipstick on that pig. The M1 was built as a 105mm tank, and once they threw a 120mm on it, the entire thing was off balance and will never recover. The ammo containment doesn't work, it can't stow enough ammo, it's a zippo with the ill-conceived jet engine that no one else was dumb enough to try, and it still gobbled up too much fuel, even with the APU. The Germans made us a good fire control system, and our crews train like madman, making up for the fact that the tank itself is shit.

We need to give up, make nice with Israel, and buy a few hundred Merkavas. If our crews can get by with a shitty tank, imagine what they could do with good hardware.

“The Army is considering additional engineering changes that would add capability to the Abrams tank,” Kotchman said.

Translation: "We will be one generation behind of whatever the enemy has. We are trying to get the Abrams to begin self-identifying as a Merkava."
