Meet the reason I haven't had any sleep the past two days. Meet "Red."

"Got any chicken jerky?"
"What is that in your hands, and can I eat it?"
"Yeah, I know my ass is on the carpet, but I'm convalescing, you know?"

You can't go wrong with a dog pound or rescue dog. They'll never forget you wanted them when somebody else didn't, and will love you like no other.

I have a feeling Red will be a great watchdog for Rosie.

How old?

As a dog lover, I can't help but smile. Hope you have many years of fun together. Every day you can look at your dog looking at you, share some affection, and think, "Lord, help me to be the person my dog thinks I am."

drjim: Unknown. The dog is certainly not full grown (after two weeks of fattening up -- he was skin and bones when we found him -- he weighs 55 pounds). He has many puppy characteristics. I would appreciate any readers' guesses about how old he might be and what breed they think he is. I mean, he looks like the pictures of a red labrador I found on the 'Net, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's something else mixed in. Exactly what I can make no guess for I am hardly a dog expert. I was going to ask the spay and neuter folks but hardly had the time. They get the money up front and then it's wham, bam, thank you ma'am, and you're out the door.

I know this: he was abused, probably by an overweight bearded bubba (given how he reacts to folks of that description) and is frightened to death of anything looking like a stick. He also has scars here and there, apparently from other dogs, but then how can you be sure? He is bonding well with me and Rosey and is gradually losing his fear of other friends and family who visit. As intelligent as he seems to be, I think he'll make a damn fine companion for us. But how old and what breed? You're guess is bound to be more informed and better than mine.

I like dogs! Keep at it.

God bless you for taking him in, Mike!

I'm sure he'll be your best buddy, and guard Rosie very well when you're not around.

We adopted a little puppy mill dog that was estimated to be about 6 years old. We have had her for about 8 years now, and she is just getting friendly with me. She does better with my wife. It sounds like Red is already warming up faster than that. Good luck with him.

Hmm. He might still be an adolescent, depending on his energy levels. If you're really curious about his breed background, there are services which can do DNA assays on your dog to determine what the makeup is.

When you think he's gotten calmed down enough, you might consider taking him to a dog park so he can socialize with other dogs.

Mike: Go out on the web an look at some pictures of Rhodesian Ridgebacks. I have a Lab-Ridgeback mix (female). If "Red" has a Ridgeback personality, be prepared for a dog that will demand to be a part of your life, and needs plenty of exercise, and expects to be treated well.

My Lab-Ridgeback still thinks it's somewhat beneath her to eat out of a bowl. Being feed by hand is much more her style.

Long legs, short muzzle, worry lines on forehead... not sure for certain, but could be Heinz, (you know, 57 varieties. ;-} )

Glad you have a friend, maybe he can help keep the Black Dog at bay long enough for you to make progress on Absolved...

Thanks for anything you may have done to help out my old friend Phil and his partner in Montana. They were at their wits end in their diffugalty with the Forest Service. In my prayers always.

Well, my guestimates and web image research seem to settle on a boxer/dane mix.
Maybe you'll luck out and it'll be a boxer dane/lab mix, otherwise it'll be taller than you at the shoulder in a year.

I'd guess some Rhodesian Ridgeback in there somewhere.

Try images of Rhodesian Ridgeback. Red is a very lucky dog.

When my pretty girl, Bailey, came to live with me, she had been seriously abused by the previous owner. She had scars all over. Everytime someone walked up to my office door, she would run and hide behind the bar at the rear of my office. I didn't even hear her bark for about 9 months. It took a couple of months before she began to fully trust me. When she died at the end of April this year, she was EVERYONE's best friend. She was with me for about 12 years, and I praise God for her. When she died, the landlord dug a hole down by the river she so loved to swim in, so that she can spend eternity looking out over the desert she ran in, and the river she swam in.
I miss her, and I'll miss her everyday for the rest of my life. But the little guy that joined our family about 2 1/2 years ago, also a rescue dog, is a comfort and a joy.

He's a beauty. Having rescued him and giving him a home you will have nothing but unconditional love from him in return. All my critters are rescues.

Why am I thinking of the movie "Turner & Hooch"....

Scott Turner:

"These are the simple rules. No barking, now growling, you will not lift your leg to anything in this house. This is not your room. No slobbering, no chewing, you will wear a flea collar. This is not your room. No begging for food, no sniffing of crotches, and you will not drink from my toilet. This is not your room."

Just did an image search on 'Rhodesian Ridgeback'. They look just like Red, right down to the white tips of his toes.

Red the Rhodesian Ridgeback and Rosey- it was meant to be.

Everyone above has a more educated guess about breed and mix, so have at it there.
But for age, considering body size, leg length, paw size, head; I'd guess 6-9 months, still a pup, but getting to the adolescent stage quickly.
Good luck with little sleep, and lots of training, "walking" and loving for the next several months until the "baby" grows up some more. But once that has happened, you will have no better or more loyal friend.
Just be sure to show that extra measure of attention and loving to Rosie, to let Red know that he can't come between the two of you. I've seen some pets get more attached to one or the other of a couple, and get jealous and nudge between a couple when they're paying attention to each other.

Red will give you what you deserve - unconditional love. We read recently that when a dog looks at you they are "hugging you" with their eyes.

Mike, If Red is even part Rhodesian Ridgeback, you have a winner. Just don't turn your back on your lunch, it might disappear! I have had three males since 1989 (the latest one, Ernie, just turned 9). They are very protective, food oriented, like lots of activity and exercise, and are big ole cuddle bugs. The one night I had an intruder at my front door, Ernie ran down the stairs ahead of me to get between me and danger, and his bark meant business. Probably why the guy stopped pounding on my door in the first place, and me holding a pistol in my skivvies at the window was just insurance to make the guy go away.
