Shoney's announces it's off limits to Second Amendment supporters.

A reader forwards this photo with the following explanation:
We were roadtripping home from the coast today and I decided we should stop and eat Shoney's. I haven't been in one in ages.
So we stopped and I spot this sign on the door.
We went on in as my son had a critically full bladder since we'd spent the past hour in a miles long traffic jam.
Initially I planned to just ignore it as such signs have no force of law and if caught carrying all they can ask you to do is leave. You commit no crime so long as you do (criminal trespass if you don't).
But laws have changed here recently and I'm now unsure of the situation plus my temper started to simmer about it. I then decide we won't be eating there.
I should have made a more direct statement of protest but all I did was tell my wife loud enough for all the staff up front to hear: "let's go find a place that respects my Constitutional rights".
I then snapped the pic and . . . they'll not get another cent of my money.
The Shoney's in question is located at 946 Lake Mitchell Rd Clanton, AL 35045. Their phone number is (205) 755-8630.

I suspect that it is the locations management, I have been is two different locations recently for Militia related meets and have not seen any signs.

Lots of businesses face this decision currently in Illinois. For three decades it has been a given - as NOBODY but cops could carry firearms. We STILL cannot carry YET in illannoy but the eventuality of April approaches.

There will be MANY who post this signage. I can't wait for the first large award for patrons harmed as a result if disarming them.

Interesting debates approach as people can carry GUNS but the state disallows smoking.

Mike, another vein but I wanted to make sure this story got to you. File this under oath breakers in small towns.

I was open carrying in town while shopping today (Chester County, TN), and after walking into the Fred's, an off-duty officer stopped me and asked for my permit. I informed him that legally he could not stop me just because I was wearing my pistol, and he went into a rant and said I didn't "have the right to do that" (OC). I told him again that he was outside the law and he then said "there are two ways we could go about this" while moving his cover garment off from his weapon.

I stopped him, said I would show him my permit, but I wanted his name and which dept. he worked for (Chester County, narcotics, I believe. Didn't even know we had one of those . . .) so I could file a complaint. He just said to make sure I tell the DA, too. When I pointed out that I have been OC'ing for almost 5 years and never had an issue until today, he said "That's because I've never seen you."

After giving my permit back, he proceeded to start lecturing me on why I shouldn't OC. I told him I was perfectly within state law and that I had already considered everything he said. That ended the conversation.

Here I thought I was in an area where I didn't have to worry so much about it. Now I know there actually are domestic enemies right in my backyard. The name of one of them is Steve Davidson.

At 64 years of age, a Viet Nam vet, I am ready to do something about all this crap going on. Anybody else?

I see no reason to support a place that announces me as a no-risk viable target just because I am in there.

When we first got concealed carry with permit in MO in 2004 the local Shoneys quickly put up a sign like that. His business took a big dip and he removed the sign. But the business never fully came back and he was forced to close the doors.

Kick them in the ... wallet!

Our tribe doesn't spend there.

That's odd because a chapter of the Louisiana Open Carry Awareness League meets at a Shoney's. Must be an individual establishment policy. Unless something has recently changed.

@ Matt - Sorry but you are the one who caused your issue. You should perhaps read the relevant law - TN law is if you have a permit you can carry any way you please. It does not specify open or concealed. Officer Davidson can however ask to see a permit. "TCA 39-17-1351 (n) (1) Except as provided in subdivision (n)(2), a permit issued pursuant to this section shall be good for four (4) years and shall entitle the permit holder to carry any handgun or handguns that the permit holder legally owns or possesses. The permit holder shall have the permit in the holder's immediate possession at all times when carrying a handgun and shall display the permit on demand of a law enforcement officer."

If you are O.C. (or CC) you must show your permit if asked by an LEO. It isn't great, but it is the law. When you refused to show your permit on demand you were actually in violation of the carry law.

Not that I will near one anytime in the near future but I can add that to the boycott list along with Buffalo Wild Wings, Kroger stores, Levi Strauss for anti-gun activities, Kohl's owned by anti-gun former Senator Herb Kohl and a list of hundreds of others. K-Mart for sure.

I am a Shoney's Franchisee as well as a member of the NRA, RWVA, an Indiana CC lifetime permit holder and a Project Appleseed volunteer. This is a decision made by the local restaurant owner. Shoney's Corporate offers no guidance either way. It is quite possible an insurance issue. I am sure a number of law abiding CC holders come in and out of my restaurants every day. I hope one is there if something ever happens. Thank God for the 2nd Amendment!

I just talked with the restaurant's manager. He stated that they never meant to prohibit concealed carry firearms, only open carry. They have ordered new signs which only forbid open carried firearms inside. The manager agrees with me that gun-free zones are simply killing fields for mass murderers, and they don't want to forbid concealed carry. I agree that they do have a right to forbid open carry in their restaurant. I think open carry just causes the firearm-carrier to lose his element of surprise over an attacker. Its like wearing a sign that says "shoot me first". So how about a little respect for the concept of private property here, folks.

I just called them - the sign is down and replaced by a "No open Carry" sign.
Concealed carry is ok.

I agree with the comment about, "a bunch of nancies".

These are a bunch of chatty Chathy's commenting here, that seem to not understand the second amendment does not REQUIRE it be concealed, in order to carry, PERIOD AND END OF DISCUSSION. Those enforcing a law that violates the Constitution, deserve to be arrested and thrown in prison themselves!

Although I carry concealed with a permit, we must begin carrying in the open, IMO. They have pushed law abiding citizens in a corner and it is time to push back HEAVILY, because the politically correct way has NOT worked. It is time to put OUR boot (using their rhetoric from some years back) on those that insist on IGNORING the CONSTITUTION.

@Okenheart
Federal court rulings including by the Supreme Court have said that OC is NOT probable cause to stop or detain someone. I have spoken with other LEO to confirm that if they do not have a MWAG call, it is illegal for the officer to stop you.
