I am sick unto death of these Alabama "big fish in a little pond" sheriffs.

It is no secret that the recent Alabama carry reform bill would have been far better and stronger had it not been for these little uniformed pricks lobbying to protect their gun permit fees and the discretionary power that goes with it. Now we have one pontificating about what constitutes "civilized." “People could be walking the streets with guns strapped to their sides but we haven’t seen that,” Thomas said. “That’s because Pike County is a civilized county.”

We had the same problem in North Carolina in the recent session of the General Assembly. Our pistol purchase permit system which dates from the Jim Crow era is administered by each county's sheriff. The State Senate wanted to kill the system because it just duplicates the NICS check. The NC Sheriffs Association almost killed the rest of the gun law reform bill because of this provision.

Thus, we still have a remnant of a bygone racist era in our laws because the sheriffs didn't want to give up that power.

Same thing just happened in NC. HB937 had an amendment eliminating pistol purchase permits. The Sheriff's Association whined about it. The legislature proved gutless. The amendment was stripped from the final bill.

The pistol purchase permit in NC is nothing but a county by county money scam sanctioned by the state. All these county Sheriffs do is run a standard NICS check - a check that would be performed anyway at the point of sale - and charge $7 for it.

In other words, in NC, the Sheriff's Association believes that the NICS is adequate for purchasing an AR and all the mags you can carry at Gander Mountain. But for a two-shot Derringer, you need special permission from the Sheriff.

They can't allow someone not possessed of "good moral character" to get their grubby hands on a pistol.

Just another Jim Crow relic that refuses to die.
