Are Police in America Now a Military, Occupying Force?

Despite this clear referendum on the fact that communities would be better served by smaller, demilitarized police forces, police agencies throughout the country are dramatically increasing in size and scope. Some of the nation’s larger cities boast police forces the size of small armies. (New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg actually likes to brag that the NYPD is his personal army.)

When the Founders warned against standing armies, they likely never imagined the day when nearly every city and 'burb would seek to establish one.

Yes they are. And when/if the revolution starts any of them still wearing a badge will be considered legitimate targets. Those shiny badges will make crackerjack aim points. I figure that any LEO or FLEA still wearing a badge after things go south WILL BE loyalists and thus fit only to be targets.

I served 33 years as an officer in a small department in New England. Us old "dinosaurs" took our oath to uphold and defend the Constitution seriously, believed we were there to actually serve the taxpayers and the public, and refused any favoritism. Now, many places appear similar to combat zones, the standard police uniform is now replaced with "tactical" gear and weapons, and younger officers seem to be trained that the public is the enemy. My hat is off to those who proudly work in all our communities, especially those who believe that protecting and serving is a calling, which requires extraordinary training, patience, and leadership. To those who truly protect our constitutional rights, I salute you. For those that will not, I hear Zimbabwe's 5th Battalion is hiring. GC

Funding. Simple as that. If a city gets tired of being pushed around by it's police force, they can cut funding. If they're too cowed to to take that simple civil action, they probably get what they deserve.
