Thinking the Unthinkable

In the wake of another horrific national tragedy, it’s easy to talk about guns. But it’s time to talk about mental illness.

it's too bad she didn't leave gun politics out of her story.

it's too bad she cited mother jones and nobody else -- conflating regrettable incidents of violence by deranged adults with other regrettable incidents of violence where a gun law inevitably failed to protect the victims.

i might have listened to her story about not hitting her kid enough and then resorting to mind-altering drugs to control him. i guess now they can never be sure whether he was born that way, with all that in his system.

one more thing. where's his dad?

An excellent piece, and making a very valid point. Why is it always the gun that is the culprit instead of the occasional fool holding one? I am horrified that little babies were killed by a monster.... a monster that will achieve a sort of sick twisted notoriety that the media gives these ass holes.

There will always be mass killings as long as the gun is blamed for the mental midgets of society in spiritual decline. Guns are not new in our society... what is new is children raised without the principals of Jesus Christ . The system is designed to further crimes like this with emphasis on the disarming of a free society to enslave us to government.

Stand fast America!

Yes. The mass shootings are a symptom of a totally broken mental health care system in this country. That, and unproductive attitudes about mental health. I've been trying to point out to gunnies that we need to be the biggest advocates for improved mental health care in this country, because we have the most to lose. Those suffering from mental health issues are causing the problems that we are being blamed for. The mentally ill can't help it -- their own body chemistry is their own worst enemy, they need help, not a behavior program. If you saw your neighbor on the ground with a broken arm after falling off a ladder, you'd get him help, not tell him to "straighten up and fly right." So, do the same for the mentally ill -- they are broken and hurting, not "behaving badly." I'm shocked at how many gunnies are openly hostile to my message -- they think all these kids need is a good spanking. It's time for an attitude change about mental health, and it needs to start with us gunnies.

So are we limited to choosing whether to scapegoat inanimate objects or to scapegoat the mentally ill?

Seems like I read statistics somewhere that showed the mentally ill commit fewer homicides per capita than the rest of the population does, so maybe it would be more logical to let the mentally ill have guns and take them away from the rest of us instead.

Mental illness is psychobabble-speak for demon possession. But since these folks have no belief in or knowledge of spiritual matters, they cannot understand that the problem is spiritual and not mental. Such behavior is the result of kicking God out of society under the guise of "separation of Church and State." This is America's harvest for what she has sown; kick God out and the devil moves in. You cannot escape this spiritual law.

That kid needed the devil cast out of him, but there's no discernment or power in the religious assemblies of mockers. They will all go to church and have vigils and nothing will change -- because the problem is spiritual, not mental. And there are millions more just like him, a hand grenade with the pin pulled, waiting to go off.

And let's face it; if they were really all that concerned about children, they would shut down the abortion industry immediately. But it's NOT about children; it's about CONTROL. And THAT has a spiritual source, too! It's the same devil, and he will bring forth more such tragedies to sway his children to disarm decent Americans in order to rule over them through his surrogates. And they are many.

Mike and Dakota,
being raised in school in the sixties, we started each day with the pledge of allegiance and a short prayer. We we also taught, right along with our lessons, manners and respect. Look at the youth of today. Most of them have no concept of manners or respect. The liberals and atheists (same thing?)have done a very good job of turning our once great country into a third world shithole. May God have mercy on our souls.

Any bimbo that wants to advertise herself with an "I Love Che" t shirt can kiss my ass.

The communists have been using the excuse of some created mental illness for control way too long to fall for such asinine stupidity.. why do you think this regime of mullah Obama's wants to tie PTSD to all the vets coming home ?

We dont need to discuss mental illness, we need to discuss ridding the country of the insurgent communists and quisling scumbags infesting it.. until we start labeling these treasonous bastards correctly for what they are, we are forever to be labeled by them and their media 5th columnists as terrorists and extremists in the eyes of the citizenry.
Stop playing nice and by their rules ! Its time to stop reacting to their accusations and finger pointing and do some of our own.. or we will never get the chance again until the shooting starts.

Gordy is spot on. The other half of the equation is that for those that are medically mentally ill (i.e not demonically possessed) NOT institutionalizing them is a real risk to all the healthy citizens of civil society.
In many cases, the old ways were better for the public's safety, and that's what counts here. (Sorry to break mom's heart, but your child is a freakin' time bomb.)

Instead of scapegoating inanimate objects or the mentally ill, why don't we start by scapegoating these two (among many others that could be discussed):

-Scapegoat the legislators, administrators and corporations that create unicorn fart "gun free zones". They never work to deter crime, and they never will.
"Gun free zone" = "criminal shooter empowerment zone".

-Scapegoat the liberal public school system (K-postgrad) that no longer teaches morality. When a child grows up in an "anything goes as long as it feels good" environment, what do you think will be the next step?
