"Rebellion in California: The dissidents from the northern counties who want to secede from the Golden State are 'a bunch of Bible-thumpin’, gun-totin’, wild-eyed pistol-wavers.'

“People who feel helpless are taking matters into their own hands. If that means violence, they’re ready for that. You can only push people so far."

“It just defies logic to think you can take all the poorest counties in California, cluster them together and somehow end up with a prosperous new state.”

Spoken like someone with no living memory of when there were actually sawmills in this state, when the Forest Service had an active timber sale program and didn't let millions of acres burn every year.

When I was a young man, schools and county road departments were flush with money from a percentage of timber receipts paid to every county that logged federal timber. The school district in Sierra County had a budget that actually allowed a school bus to load up whatever kids wanted to go skiing and drive the 2 hours each way to Boreal Ski Area every week in the winter. Plumas County's road department had an amazing inventory of heavy equipment, with which county employees would do road improvement projects that were unheard of today. Now, these counties are entirely dependent on Congress to appropriate borrowed money every five years in hopes that they will be able to keep the teachers that they do have.

Any doubters of the State of Jefferson (they all happen to be union people or Democrats, BTW) should just get out of the way and let us 'Bible-thumpers' have at it. We'll do just fine without them, and the California Air Resources board too. XX

You gotta love that!

Being I'm in upstate NY I know just how they feel...

These disaffected citizens — overwhelmingly white and mostly conservative — share many of the concerns about central state overreach as the militia members who recently took control of a wildlife refuge in Oregon.

What a bunch of racist partisan horse apples.
Had to stop reading... There's no point to making a statement liket that...
What if I said the superbowl halftime show was comprised of cultural Marxists, many overwhelmingly black, who dress up in known subversive paramilitary uniforms to normalize the idea of overthrowing traditional American values? What if then I published it in a rag that reaches millions of people? Would I be castigated as a racist or validated for pointing out a microcosmic pseudo-truth and then making it sound as if that was the measured pulse of the entire nation?
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that sentence (or fragments, thereof) is a perfect example of what's happening right now, right here in our home. If words were bullets I'd consider that a first shot... But what do I know. I'm just some ignorant bible thumping homophobic gun nut who doesn't belong in Andrew Cuomo's utopian baby killing empire state.

This is full-on BS.
The NY Daily News is obviously much further away from California then the 'Jefferson' state counties are. And it shows here. Just look at the second map.
In particular, the I-80 corridor counties between Reno and Sac are not joining Jefferson, against the Sacramento area. Mendocino county will never secede, nor will any of the coastal counties or the coastal areas of those counties.
Finally, the water will never belong to these counties. After all, who built the dams (and Shasta county does not supply the state anyway, most of the state water comes from the Sierra and from the Colorado River).

This is a story that's trotted out annually or so. Still BS.

"both sections of the state are well aware of what kind of leverage a northern breakaway would possess."

Thus I give the movement less chance of success than a single snowflake on the casing of a 50 megaton thermonuke does of surviving detonation. Sorry folks, outside of a full-on armed rebellion it just ain't happening.

Horse hockey! There's EVERY point to making a statement like that - for someone writing for the NYT. By characterizing the "disaffected citizens" as she did, Ms Goodyear instantly and effectively discredits the malcontents to her readers. Ms Goodyear is too competent a writer to characterize as being incompetent, therefor I see no reason not to attribute her remarks to malice aforethought. Doubtless, had she been alive during American Revolution 1.0, she would have been against the revolution as well. I find it fascinating that the people who so vociferously support change would fight so hard to maintain status quo when it comes to government power.

Article. IV. Section. 3. New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

Never gonna happen. California simply cannot afford to lose those water rights...nor are the progs inclined to give up an acre to exploitation by a bunch of conservative whites.

Otto... Good catch. Should've added the qualifier 'good'
There's no GOOD point to making a statement liket that.
Despite rereading a half dozen times on a phone with troubles just posting, sometimes ideas come across the wrong way. Incomplete thoughts or an errant t may escape my proof reading. I do humbly apologize to all who may have misconstrued my intent and I fall before the masses to plead absolution for my malfeasance.

If they expect to form another separate state, they'll have the formidable job of having to kill every one of their opposition.

Sorry, Tony. I didn't intend to insult. No need for public penance. If there is a single good aspect of stories such as this, it is that the masses do not read the NYT (or much of anything, one suspects) anyway. The only people she reaches are folks who would not support those folks any way.

It's an intoxicating idea, and one that's doomed from the get-go.

Not only do the career politicians including their own "representatives" derive their power from sucking the lifeblood out of those counties and doling it back in the form of EBT deposits, but the Jefferson supporters themselves would sooner gouge their own eyes out than face the horrifying reality of actual liberty among any not strictly in line with their own worldviews.

That sentence about the lesbians guarding their pot and hemp fields with a .50-cal pretty much summed it up. That hypothetical couple would have every political faction under the sun united in shrieking for their blood. ...and I can't help but imagine that they in turn would be leading another torches-and-pitchforks crowd at the house up the road with the Dixie flag on its porch, thus far too busy to be bothered defending their own liberty.

Some talk a good game about Liberty but our minds are far more at ease using the power of the state (or county or municipality) as a cudgel against our icky neighbors, and vice versa. Liberty is a pretty word, but what we repeatedly demonstrate that we really want is just a bigger better cudgel.

Is it any wonder that's what we've got?
