Thank you for the article on the personal defense situation in Ukraine.
My experience with Russian-bloc weapons ended with the AK-74, Dragunov, and Makarov. I can see from recent footage that there are newer versions, probably in calibers I am not aware of.
I hope the Ukrainians are able to get more firearms into the hands of their defenders. Russians are currently disarming Ukrainian forces and placing the arms in Ukrainian controlled armories. They are not letting them leave the armories.
When Ukraine gets its nation back, I sincerely hope they enact legislation allowing citizens to keep and bear arms.
Why have the Ukrainians waited so long to get armed? They have been invaded by Poles, Sweden, Lithuania, Germany, Russia and maybe some country I'm not currently thinking about. Major battles were fought across her territory between Germany and Russia. Millions of weapons were left laying on the ground and in unguarded stockpiles. No excuse, as I see it, not to have a gun buried somewhere.
At this point isn't their desire to arm themselves rather analogous to closing the barn door after the horses have bolted? Of course there's no reason for all those nice Russian assault rifles to remain in the hands of Russians, is there? Surely there will be at least a couple of opportunities to "liberate" a few guns. I should think that with a little ingenuity those people could come up with ways to both arm themselves and reduce the Russian troop strength.

Add Ukraine to the long list of people and peoples betrayed after being promised security in return for disarmament.
