Mike I don't know about Alabama; But Kentucky is Awash in Mexicans. THE ONLY way to get them out now would be military force. Realy, door to door serch and grab is the only thing that would work. What will we do with the ones who have married Anglos? With there Children? What about the ones that got "amnisty" from Bush /Clinton/Bush? What about the multi-genarational familys, many of whom have an anglo parent? Rand Paul may have seen the light-that as far as the ones that are here go, we are stuck with them.
Just some food for thought. I have a small area of my practice that involves Immigration law, and this has led me to see just how broken our system is.
One client that I couldn't do anything to help was a family, one of whom was an illegal Immigrant. Both had come here from Eastern Europe to escape bad conditions here. Both tried to come legally, and only one was given a visa. The other spouse was stuck in a situation where they could have paid a bribe (as a family friend in an identical situation did) or could come here illegally to be with their spouse. This individual made the bad choice of coming illegally, resulting in a situation where this one spouse would need to go back to Eastern Europe for 10 years before being allowed to try again legally.
I have met many others with similar situations where it would be preferable to give them, at least, some form of legal residence if not citizenship.
Granted, there are plenty of illegals here to mooch off of our welfare state, but my sample has seen at least 50% who came here illegally because our broken system left them no legal way in, but who want to work, pay taxes, and are pretty similar to us in their views of freedom.
Having a pathway to Citizenship may be the wrong way to do it, but some form of permanent residence with no citizenship, or shortening the 10 year lockout, bear some consideration.
One reason I would tend to prefer a system that allowed people to apply for some form of residence rather than shortening the lockout is because of possible recriminations against those from Eastern Europe and other corrupt or repressive places. Our Asylum system is pretty broken as well, so it does not protect these people as well as it should. Persecuted Christians trying to get here find it increasingly difficult to be granted asylum or refugee status.
Basically, the entire system is FUBAR and needs to be reworked from the ground up, and THEN we need to look at who's here illegally and why, and then come up with a proper solution that helps the good and tosses back the moochers.
The race for 2016 is ON! Once again, the GOP steps backwards.
"For Paul, there are political overtones to his newly articulated stance, since he's viewed as a potential presidential candidate and Hispanics are an increasingly important part of the electorate. Latino voters overwhelmingly backed President Barack Obama last year, helping seal his re-election, and Paul said the GOP needs to reverse that trend or risk "permanent minority status."
He's foolish to believe Hispanic's will ever surrender their place at the government trough or their growing political power in the progressive movement. With minimal organizing, they've already achieved a political status the TEA party is struggling desperately for. Rand Paul ain't gonna' deliver the Hispanic votes to rescue the GOP from political and social demise.
The GOP is finished. They've already achieved permanent minority status. Unfortunately, that's leaving us with overt communist party rule. The judiciary, education systems and political bureaucracy will exist as tools used for implementing social control long into the unseen future.
The Hispanic's have already been conditioned to accept an oligarchy. Expecting them to take responsibilities necessary to support a Republic form of governance? Accept terms of citizenship from a foe they've already conquered without firing a shot? Absurd! The Democratic party has ceded them a table in the grand banquet halls of power. They don't need the GOP. They're already in the door. Why should they leave and ask to come back in?
Citizenship has lost its luster. Way over-rated and irrelevant to 2016.
Me, too. Not that he ever really "had" me in the first place. I applauded him when he was right - Hell's bells, I'd applaud Dear Leader if HE ever did something I approved of (not that I reckon it's likely to happen, mind you) - but I was never a "follower" of Rand Paul. If I can be accused of being a "follower" of anybody it's our beloved Gray Emminence here.
Rand Paul is and always been a politician first and foremost. Nothing more, nothing less. Given a choice between what is right for the republic and right for the party we the people will suck hindmost teat as always. Remember there's only two kinds of politicians you can be certain aren't lying - the ones that aren't saying/writing anything and the ones that are dead.
Mike you and the other guys who have commented are idiots. In order to make real changes and a transition to liberty you have to get elected and in order to get elected you have to do things. If you can't see that Rand Paul is the best hope for our country's return to the principles of liberty that Founding Fathers had you are a moron. You keep telling us about civil war and all this other bullshit. Civil War is not the answer. Civil War will result in something that neither you or anyone else can control. Rand Paul is our best hope.
Paul did NOT endorse a grant of citizenship. He endorsed legal status in exchange for securing the border, and that they would have to go to the back of the citizenship line and apply just like they would if they were legal immigrants.
It is silly to drop the only advocate a patriot currently has in Congress simply because he acknowledges the obvious...there will be no mass roundup at gunpoint and deportation on prison trains to Mexico. Surely those plugged in enough to read this site understand that fact. I'm not sure why a patriot would even want our government to get practice at that.
The fact is there is no way the government is going door to door using force to remove these people, whose children are legally American citizens under current law. Not gonna happen. That is the kind of government we patriots should want to avoid. We screwed up by not securing the border, now we have to deal with the consequences.
Personally I think we should grant legal status to those who are not guilty of any crimes besides entering illegally, let them start paying taxes for the government services they are already receiving ANYWAY, with the understanding that they lost the privilege to vote because of the way they entered.
Paul is right...people who receive all government services, who get paid under the table and thus avoid taxes, already have defacto amenesty. Its time to acknowledge that and start making them contribute something. He is using this as leverage to securing the border. Otherwise, in a few years we will be having this same conversation only half of Mexico will be here and there will be no point to securing the border.
He signaled all you needed to know with his endorsement of romney, aka obama lite.
Illegals can be "nudged" to leave, easily. States can dump them off welfare, SS, & housing assistance. ENGLISH ONLY. NO DRIVERS LICENSE FOR ILLEGALS & NO VOTING EITHER.
According to the CONstitution, only states can determine requirements for voting.
Something I'd like to add, EVERY Mexican I know works,And they work HARD. Most work two and sometimes three jobs. The ones here in central Ky go to Mass on sunday, Buy homes and cars ,Pay tax, and break no more laws than I do. They good people to live next door to. There is no way to change the fact that they are here ,so lets at least give them legal status. We can then spend our time and energy on CLOSEING the border. I suggest that is the proper role for the ARMY. Not the green uniformed Cops With Tanks(DHS/ICE).

Add me to that list, Mike. Apparently he's just a McCain clone in sheep's clothing, but I'm glad the cat is out of the bag early in the game.
Well, he just lost me.
DITTO!
I'm glad we found out now.
Hmm, Well he can't do us any good if he doesn't get into office, alot can happen once he is there!

Anyhow, rand paul is not his father.
damn shame.
Try doing some actual research, maybe even reading the actual speech, and not some AP article... I expect better from you!

And why should they? The rest of us sure don't!
I don't mind what he says here, but he lost me back when he said we should continue our meddling in the Middle East.
