On an unrelated note, I am in the process of engraving "III" on 200 one inch ball bearings. Its tedious, and they keep slipping out of the vise and rolling across the shop floor........but I will persevere....they are not for me, I intend to make "gifts" of them. The fun part is not in the making, but in the delivery.

Anon, see if someone has a laser engraver you can borrow for a bit. They can burn metal, though mileage may vary. It'll be a lot easier than using a mechanical engraver, though make sure you're paying cash for the privilege to a trusted person.

Make a jig out of wood or lead to fit in the jaws of the vise, it should hold them steady enough to work on. The easiest way I can think of would be to drill a 3/4 inch hole through two pieces of wood, then cut them off about a quarter of the way down the hole. Put a screw into the ends of the wood to bridge the hole and you should be able to clamp a sphere pretty tightly.
