What part of "reenactment" don't they understand?

It appears that Rich Iott, a GOP candidate for congress in Ohio, is in trouble for having been a military reenactor of World War II Waffen SS. Of course he was also photographed in the uniforms of a Union soldier of the War Between the States and an American Doughboy of World War I. He states he participated in reenactments because he wanted to interact with his son.

Now however he is being attacked by folks of both parties.

Okay, anybody who's read any of my stuff knows that I'm as anti-Nazi as they come and have the record to prove it -- at street level where it can cost you. I never got into WWII reenacting, but if I had I would not have donned a Waffen SS uniform because the ghost of my Uncle Bill Vanderboegh would have haunted me until, and after, the day I died.

But I mean really. Its a reenactment. Reenactments need troops of both sides as it takes both sides to achieve the desired result of recreating history for the crowd. When I was a CW reenactor, I wore both coats. This said nothing about my opinions of either slavery or Lincoln's destruction of the Founders' Constitution.

But because it is all about desperate politics and political correctness, Iott is being crucified for finding a harmless outlet for interacting with his son.

But if we are going to allergic about politicians wearing "extremist" clothing ("extremist" being the new buzz word), then why not crucify every Democrat politico who was photographed wearing a Che Guevara, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, or Lenin tee shirt in college? I mean, those were real killers, right? And the wearers were certainly buying into the politics of the mass murderers, right?

You see, it doesn't work. No outrage from these mokes there. "Our killers weren't as bad as your killers, and besides we're not running for office on a GOP ticket."

Sheesh.

Of course, it also could be that military reenacting involves firearms and these pukes are as allergic to them as Dracula is to a Crucifix, or crooked politicians and cockroaches are allergic to the antiseptic qualities of light.

More than likely a pot shot hoping they can paint him as a neo-nazi for the crowd who are un-informed about reinactors.

Like you I never got interested in WWII stuff but I have worn the uniform of all sides for the periods I have taken an interest in.

the democrat progressive POSs can't run on a record of good, so they only can try to attack on a personal level, notice any trends here. duh...

I seem to recall a couple of years ago one of the Royals got into it for dressing as a Nazi for Halloween.
One of the princes IIRC. So, given that the article is out of the BBC, I guess it's just more of the same. Nothing substantial to go after so they dwell on trivial carp like this.

Spent the weekend educating a college kid. Danged if I didn't turn 'im around, too. Boy told me "Now I'm PISSED!"

GOOD!

Hopefully, this crap will blow up in the bastard's faces.

Uncle always taught me: "Boy, when the flak starts flying, you know you're on target!"

I think he was right...

I really can't recall ever seeing the like of the down-right, UTTERLY-false character-assassination I've seen this go-round.

It's one thing to bend the truth a bit, but The Evil Party really seems to have pulled out all the stops this time.

Are these tantrums what behavioral scientists call "extinction behavior"?

Except that for Byrd it wasn't a costume, it was a uniform consistent with his rank in the Klan.
Oh well, grasping at straws in a hurricane. Democrats are going to be bitch slapped soundly in less than a month. We'll see then whether they're good sports or sore losers.

Hell, I guess running around in an OPFOR uniform in Germany back in the 80s makes me a Communist too.

How in the Hell do they expect to stage a reenactment if nobody wears the bad guy's uniforms? SOMEBODY'S got to be the Germans. It's all BS.

Now granted, wearing a Union uniform might be going a little overboard, but hey, It's supposed to be a free country, right?

Being a reenactor isn't like Prince Harry of England wearing a Nazi costume to a masquerade party thinking it was nothing. Now THAT'S scary.
(There is a kind of theme party called Shibboleth, where eveyone dresses as what they fear most, but I don't think this was that.)

They don't want us to remember that there WERE bad guys, or how bad they were, or what they were capable of. Makes it easier to cast 21st century patriot militias in the role of the Evil Empire Reborn.
Because what was the World War II Resistance but citizen patriot militias? Without them, history would be very different.
In some comic strip, a little girl sees a man in a park and asks him about the numbers tattooed on his arm. He soft-pedals how they are from a very bad time.
"You keep them so you'll remember?" she asks.
"No, so YOU will."

Steven Carrell, actor famous for his roles in "The Office" TV series, the movie "The 40 Year Old Virgin", "Get Smart" and others, earned a degree in History after growing up in a family of American Revolutionary War re-enactors in Massachusetts. He played an infantryman in the British 10th Regiment of Foot and also as an American militiaman in reenactments of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. He played a Revolutionary War era tune on a fife on the David Letterman show.

So, does that make Steven Carrell a confused Loyalist/Royalist/Tory?

Islamic cartoon superheroes from the United Arab Emirates. The creator says they work together using "global values" of loyalty, mercy and such.
Be nice if those things caught on in the UAE and the rest of the Middle East.
One is reported to fight evil wearing a full burka.
"The 99" already has the Obama seal of approval.

"[T]he situation is now making some in the Republican Party uncomfortable, the BBC's Ian Mackenzie in Washington says.

On Sunday, Republican whip Eric Cantor said he repudiated Mr Iott's actions."

Do you suppose Liam Neeson's portrayal of Oskar Schindler put Eric Cantor's panties in a knot?

Isn't it an indication of mental illness when you can't tell Mickey Mouse from a rat in the trash can?
