Communications is the one important area that I am very weak in. I can read maps, create hides/blinds, hit a birds eye at 100 yards. But communications is my downfall. I hope, if you find time, you could do a good piece on basics and perhaps units that are user friendly that a novice like me can use to familiarize myself in this area of ops..
Mike, Interesting history on an older Cold War era radio set, but I don't think I'd want to use it in a current real-world post SHTF situation (unless it was the only thing available). It was cutting edge for its day, and the technology at the time, but still appears to be as twitchy as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
I think I'll stick with my SG-2020 for now. Small, portable, fairly light (about 5 lbs), broadband, CW and SSB. There are other radios out there, some from kits, that are equally portable and versatile.
"Light" is a relative term, when you start talking about comms. Especially radio comms. Nothing comes free. The radio set itself. Cables. RF coax. ANtenna(s). Power (battery and/or generator). It all adds up.
Mike, please do me a favor and pass along the following information to Anon 7:47 AM, who wanted more comm training: If you want radio training, look to try and find an Amateur Radio (Ham) operator in your area. They will be fairly easy to spot. Look up to the rooftops for towers and antennas. Also, try to find a Ham club in your area. It usually costs to join, but nothing to merely attend meetings. Most meet once per month, and have a class during the meeting (subject matter will vary widely). ANd for last, try this website;

This man knows much, and is more than willing to answer questions (as his time and health permits). He also has classes on Post SHTF portable EmComm (Emergency Communications) operations.
