Young people not old enough to remember the gas shortages of the 1970s . I carried a gas can for two years after the shortages were over because you just never know. What America needs is a good old fashion panic . Maybe Ebola will do the trick.
If you got the cash, buy the ammo. Never can tell when you might need it, and it is better to have-and-not-need than to NEED AND NOT HAVE. Stock up while you can.
Up here it's the "Friday morning Rush", as Gander mountain gets a Friday delivery also. I'm usually first on the line when i need to go, but when the doors open the men will actually try to run past this 57 year old woman to get to the back of the store! If anyone here is from nY and remembers Kleins on 14th street, that's what it reminds me of. Women fighting over sheets at a "white sale". Imagine how they'll get when there's no food for sale?
It is all the AR and MP5 .22 clones out there. When it was just plinking pistols and 10-22's there was plenty of ammo at 2 cents a round. Now you can't find any at less than 8 cents a round.
I would rather practice and shoot with my AK at 20 cents a round or my 9mm reloads at less than 15 cents.
One of the stores here had a similar issue. There was an old guy who was always first in line. But the younger crew would beat him to the back of the store and he missed out on some ammo. He raised cane about it and the store changed their policy. Now just before the store opens an employee comes out and hands out numbered tickets like you would get at the barber shop. You have 5 minutes after the store opens before they call the numbers. Works great.

Few years back, some people talked about .22 ammo being the nest form of currency. Some took it very seriously.

It'll be OK guys.
Just as soon as uncle sugar's go-zillion round orders are filled, there'll be plenty of other rounds available.
There is only so much brass, you know. So much powder. So much lead. So much time.
And let's face it, you're just not that important to your uncle or the businesses he funds, with your money, not to mention your kids and their's....
