This is a simple thing: Putin knows bonobo is a feckless weakling who's only ambition is to destroy his nemesis....the good old USA. To that end, bonobo and Putin are on the same page and in fact Putin flipping off the world and moving on Crimea meets both of their objectives.
OMG! OMG! He's going to take over the whole world! OMG!
The USSR ran the Great Socialist Experiment in near-laboratory conditions for 70 years, and in the end they all went out dirty, wet, cold, and hungry because Communism (and its clones) doesn't work as an economic model. Eventually the friction induced by the flaws in the baseline philosophy cause the whole thing to grind to a halt. See Hayek's "The Road To Serfdom" for the fine detail.
Let's not chicken-little ourselves to death over a non-threat. The greatest downside we might have to worry about is that a revived Soviet Union based on free market capitalism might force us to imitate them.
I believe the best way to understand Vladimir Putin, is to study Yuri Andropov. Both were KGB, both believe in action, including extreme measures, in protecting and expanding Russia.( The Soviet Union, in Andropov's case.)Their philosophy using extreme measures mirror one another. The think tanks in Washington would do well to study the parallels, in predicting in advance, what Putin will do. Not that the limp-wristed Obama would act on their intelligence, but it'd be nice to know someone is earning their paycheck.
A Capitalist Soviet Union.. That really does sound like a workers paradise. Better than the authoritarian capitalism that America seems infatuated with.
Being Roma(Eastern European) I completely understand what Putin is doing and why. Its what I would do if I ruled Russian. In Eastern Europe and in any of the former Soviet Republics men of action are respected.
America is the parallel opposite. The people that would lead this country are either killed or put in prison in the name of public safety or persecuted to the point of seclusion. America kills the people who would protect her to the death and then acts indignant when no one wants to step up to the plate.
The President we have is a Reflection of Society just as all politicians reflect society and its rational ignorance, a.k.a. Stupidity.
America: Love it or leave it because its the way you made it.
Actually, follow the money, or the oil. Oil and gas reserves were found off the Black Sea. Kiev was in talks with chevron and Exxon. The profits would have benefited Russia unless the West had succeeded in sucking the Ukraine into the EU. Then, the EU could suck the profits. When Ukraine voted not to join the EU, enter the Maidens. The Maiden protesters were trained in Poland just weeks before the riots started.
But then the people fought back in Crimea and the East. Now that Crimea has seceded to Russia, Exxon has exclusive rights to drill for Russia. Obama is pretty quiet about the whole Crimea thing, now. Guess which CEO of the worlds third largest company told him to shut up.
Now hear the war drums, because the international banksters don't want to lose the rest of Ukraine.
All roads lead to Rome, and all wars lead to the banksters.
War propaganda. The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming! The State Dept. and the CIA staged a violent coup and installed a US/IMF controlled puppet. Putin knows what the US/Brussels are up to, and he is protecting his country and his people. It would be nice if our politicians would try that instead of always selling us out to the banks, corps., and MIC. As always, the US government is the bad guy here.
A little nationalism isn't such a bad thing. I'd take it over the nihilistic relativism that the American Left has replaced it with.
Russia's long term future is brighter than America's precisely because they have a sense of nation. The idea of an American nation has been successfully replaced with the new concept of dozens of little mini-nations. The veneer of commonality will grow ever thinner until it disappears entirely, at which point the only common ground will literally be common ground.

I don't give a damn about Ukraine or Russia. We have our hands full here at home with home-grown tyranny.
Why is the FBI in Ukraine?
