"What I saw at the doomsday prepper convention."

"I rarely hear the crazy theories now. Now everyone's worried mainly about the collapse of the dollar," says Hogwood, referring to widespread prepper fears of hyperinflation triggered by the Federal Reserve's quantitative easing.
Hogwood, friendly and round-faced, reflected the resolute averageness that permeated the show. He snorted derisively at conspiracy theorists, and also acknowledged some of the ironies of a preparedness trade show. "Sometimes it's like a toy store, and people buy stuff because they like it." But in a real survival situation, "the more you know, the less you have to carry. A lot of people don't know much and think they can buy their way out of it." He sees some of the extremism surrounding the prepping industry as hype, maybe even fearmongering. "It's so much more fun to worry about martial law than a hurricane. People like zombies as a marketing tool."
In fact, I spot more than a few zombie-themed rifle targets at the show. But Hogwood is also emphatic that, the image aside, prepping is about skills -- not guns. "You see some cool weaponry ... but who needs a grenade launcher?" Despite the presence of at least five booths of firearms and accessories, many exhibitors are equally dismissive, even derisive, toward guns, gun shows, and the culture surrounding them. John Egger tried to sell seed kits at a gun show once and won't be returning. Gun show attendees are "a different breed of people. They don't want to learn."
Casting your pearls before swine, eh Egger?

That's weird -- I bet I could go to a garden show and find people who want to buy guns.

The US has two ways to deal with its huge debt.

1) Repudiate its soverign debt

2) Hyper inflation

Paying it off at present rates is impossible - Hell, even paying the interest is getting beyond the country's ability!

JMO, but were I of a "prepare" state of mind I'd be seeking lightweight, durable and portable knowledge resources and its equally lightweight implementing technology ! You can only carry so much. And even having a series of "chaches" doesn't offer reliable security if they get discovered !

Ultimately, your only "security " is what you carry in your head. Or in some dense, durable, reliable media format. Highly valued members of a clan or society have always been those with "knowledge" . Knowledge they can demonstrate to heal wounds, prevent disease, improve the standard of living and make the "tribe" safer.

IMNSHO too much in this arena focuses on the short-term conflict stage. The real test IMO is long-term survival.

Yes, well, you have to make it through this:

"the short-term conflict stage."

in order to get to this:

"long-term survival."

Your point is a good one but, since you're not of a "prepare" state of mind, I guess you're not bothering to plan for either the conflict or the rebuilding phases.

What are you doing here?
