The pen may be thought to be mightier than the sword - but occassionaly the ink runs out and the 'lead pencil' needs must be pressed into use!

Two observations:

1. I consider it significant that the phrase was coined by a writer.

2. While the adage might be true, given a choice I'd rather face a man with a "rapier wit" than a man with an actual, honest-to-god rapier. The former can prick my conscience or wound my pride, the other can quite literally carve out my innards. It is possible to survive the most grievous wound to the pride - to then entrails not so much.
