Praxis: Shodan -- The scariest search engine on the Internet

Google being unable to find something is no surprise at all. It's increasingly bubbling us, in my experience. Google is convinced that it has to sell stuff on every search, and that it knows better than I do what I am looking for.

I've been using Duck Duck Go just for simple, non-controversial stuff.

Nice to see this info posted in more general venues. Those with an evil bent already know about this (and have long since surpassed it). What's important is making the general public aware of just how lax the "gatekeepers" to so much of our infrastructure have, been. (And remain, apparently ! )

First son chose this arena as a second career and this article makes me further appreciate his wisdom. >Jeff

I wonder if Shodan could be used to shut down the fire control system on a MRAP, Striker, helicopters ? At least turn off the electronic computerized engines or navigation systems on certain SUV's or drones? You know, something useful.

Just for kicks I typed in "SKS for sale" (since Google doesn't do firearms related stuff anymore, and those terms might elicit some "backwoods" entries). Garbage came out with Shodan, and you needed to log in for some reason.

Pfffft. Why bother? Doesn't appear useful at all to me. Could be SPLC's new IPO in the works. Could even be Nappy's new project.

One can always do a TOR with the other more useful/established engines that aren't on your browser's drop down list. If you want to go backwoods, try Craigslist.

Don't use Google anymore. I don't trust them. Screw them and the horse they rode in on.

The issue here is not Shodan itself. Apparently the developer is keeping it under control. The issue is that something like Shodan is possible. Bad guys can develop their own version, outside the control of Shodan's developer.

Looks like the real-life version of "Live Free or Die Hard" will be premiering soon!

After reading the post I went to the info link about shodan yesterday and just read some of the info about it. My computer then went dead as though I had shut down its power. It took several tries after that to get my computer to reboot properly. I dunno if using that link had anything to do with it, but I'm scared to even try to use shodan. I use dogpile.com for my search engine instead of google.

What the crap? Who names their search engine Shodan, for crissake?!

Sorry. This is a little out of y'all's experience, probably. But 'SHODAN' was the evil AI from the System Shock games. She was a scary, scary bitch.
