To simplify the task of raising vegetables, I adopted the "square foot" gardening method. Its inventor, Mel Bartholomew, is a retired engineer.

Using four 4x4 raised beds with vertical trellising provides me with 128 sq ft of growing area. With good planning, each "square' can be harvested and replanted several times.

Except for substituting pressure treated 2x6s for the recommended 2x4s, I have followed Mel's book "to the T" and enjoyed good success for several years. As with any innovation, there is a steep learning curve, so start now with one 4x4 bed and see if this method will work for you.

I highly recommend that preppers become aware of the numerous advantages to this superior gardening technique.
