I like the way the Swiss do the militia thing, but we gotta remember that the Swiss are also European. Ergo, outside of a very strong militia system and tradition, they can be as skittish around guns as any New Yawkah. Concealed carry is not that common, and in some cantons is very difficult to achieve (e.g., Geneva) versus others (e.g., Vaud).
We need to re-energize the U.S. militia system. We (the People) allowed it to atrophy, to be supplanted in the popular consciousness by the National Guard, and then vilified by the mainstream press. We must resurrect it; I think Oath Keepers has a new iniative to begin this process in local communities throughout the republic.
I truly yearn for the day when the police are not called for me carrying a FAL para. I have a dream where a man will not be judged by the scariness of his firearm but by citizens who do not feel the need to violate my constitutional rights... Pipe dream perhaps?
