"Civil Servants" -- They're not civil and they do not serve. Snow men in the Big Apple.

"Sanit bigs boozed amid snow chaos: witnesses."

A group of on-duty Sanitation supervisors is under investigation for allegedly buying booze and chilling in their cozy department car for hours Monday night after the blizzard stranded a bus and three snowplows blocks away.

The city Department of Investigation is probing the incident after witnesses said four snow blowers blew off their duties to get blitzed, buying two six-packs of beer from a Brooklyn bodega. The workers then walked five blocks to their car, which was in 20 inches of snow in the middle of 18th at McDonald avenues near the F train entrance, passing the stuck bus and idle plows on 18th Avenue between Third and Fourth streets.

The four remained in the idling sedan until morning -- then told their bosses they could do nothing about the blizzard because they had run out of gas, one witness said.

"They just sat in their car all night with the heat running," the witness said.

Here's the question: When a real disaster comes to your town, how will your "civil servants" react? Is it a better bet to count on them, or your own resources?

Got militia?

I've been getting dirty looks (and not a few nodding approving ones) for years ever since I started asking how many "civil servants" folks have met who were either - civil or servants!

Ought to fire the lot of them. Won't happen since they are protected both by the unions AND by civil service rules but it ought to. Hey! If FDR thought government employee unions was a bad idea maybe he wasn't so bad after all.

Where I live people don't hole up and cry Help Help to be rescued. When a snowstorm hits every ablebodied man hits the streets with snowplows and pickup trucks. Everyone keeps shovels and chains in their trunks.

WTF people? You know it's coming. It ain't like it doesn't happen every year. Then again we are talking about NYC. Myself, I don't know why anyone would willingly live in a place where you are left solely to the mercy of others.

Take care of your own business, people. And try to be one of the ones who step up to help those who can't. It is always the same heroes out there to clear the road of a fallen tree, pull a car out of a ditch, collect money for a family in need, help put out a housefire or plow out a street in winter. They are usually your neighborhood militia/VFD. Be one!

In my short but very informative association with one of the Genovese family, I got the distinct impression that one word from a Capo and all four of those lazy punks would either be scrambling to do what they're paid to do, or one would be in the hospital and the other three would be scrambling to work. 1950's New York seemed to run just a little bit smoother . . . none of this yearly 'job performance review' stuff and a LOT shorter time between 'cause' and 'effect'.

For Dr.D:

You're right. NO cavalry. Just a pack of wild pigs. And RESCUE is not what they have in mind.

At least not YOUR rescue.

From what I've read, there were a whole lot more who called in sick and what-not. It seems they decided to "squeeze" the good citizens of their fair city since contract-talks are coming up.

In other words, they acted as criminal thugs generally do - except when they're not on the public dole/payroll it's called "extortion."

OTOH, Alvie had a corollary post the other day which makes one wonder if these mokes (and the others who stayed home) didn't do the citizens in their sector a favor.

Me? If I live in NYFC I'd be about ready to start putting some of those lamp-posts to their alternate use...

I'd sure love to see hizzonner 'Da May-yah pull a Ronnie Raygun and fire every last one of them. I'm betting there's enough folks out of work in NYFC who'd LOVE to have their jobs.

'Course that would require him to spit out the Union-boss's **** and get up off his knees...

It shouldn't have been difficult to sneak up on the boozers in their car, take them out and prone them in the snow. Flex cuffed, hobbled, and tied to each other, they might have survived the night. If not, oh, well.

Where's Bernie Goetz when you need a "vigilante"?
