"It's Time to Train Officers Not to Kill Dogs."

Past time, I'd say.

I recall reading a story that happened during hurricane Katrina. A family refused to evac because they could not take their dogs with them, were in a relatively safe location, and were well prepared to ride it out. Among the rescuers was a LEO, trying to force them to abandon the dogs. When the owner would not because of the dogs, the LEO pointed a gun at them and said he would fix the problem. When the owner pointed his shotgun at the LEO and basically told him if he did that, he would eliminate the problem of having to evac after.

They left in a huff and yelling they would be back and they would be in serious trouble.

That did not happen according to the story. I do not know how true or not this story is, but with all the stuff that did happen during Katrina that can be proved, this ranks low on the BS meter IMHO.

I find it both strange and disgusting that too many police officers are blowing away family pets and claiming self defense.

After something like fifteen years or so of police, security, armed patrol, etc, I NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, needed to dispatch a dog. Use of mace, baton, or deadly doggy treat, did the trick.

Most times the pooch would amble up sniff and wag tail looking for a scratch.

Obviously too many officers out there have no clue as to how to deal with animals.

Sad.

...and accosting young women for buying bottled water; and trumping up obstruction charges on families so you can commander their house; and shooting people in the face for placing bets on sporting events, and....

LEO is finished, dust in my book. They are just one more part of a problem that desperately needs to be solved - the hard way.

Cannot help but laugh sometimes at the Cowardice displayed by these once looked up to supposed Role-Models. Just Yesterday we had two loose Bulls from a nearby property causing mayhem up and down our streets and in the Yards. I got in front of one and played Traffic Cop with him. Bwahahaha he Stopped about 10 feet in front of me and just Stared. I did not make any further attempts to tell him what to do...He headed Left. But Jeeeeez, To SHOOT such a beautiful Creature? Courage Under Fire!,,,Killing Puppy Dog?... Pussies!

I think the dog killing is part of an "entitlement" mentality on the part of police, plus the type and character of the cops coming into LE. (Although, to be fair, some of the cops doing the shooting are not rookies.) Entitlement - "because I have a badge, I can do whatever I want to animals, and most of what I wish to humans, and my department and the courts will back me up." Obviously, the psych tests they give to applicants are failing OR a big change happens once a person enters the force because of prevailing "cop culture." I never agreed with the term "pig" during the Hippie days (I was not a Hippie) but now it looks like an apt description.

Police Departments usually have a few shit bags for officers, who would kill dogs, even if there were an alternative. If there is a questionable shooting and the Chief stands in support of his officers, that is the time to organize. Police Departments depend on information to function. If the citizens see their local police as invaders, or a law unto themselves, shut off all information. If any type of incident occurs, you didn't see anything, hear anything and know absolutely nothing. Use the federal government employees favorite defense: I do not recall. Lawlessness will force the city fathers to bring pressure on the chief to get his thugs under control.

quote:"Danville’s chief says the officer followed policy."unquote

quote:"That’s precisely the problem."unquote

youbetcha.."policy"..policy for this..policy for that..policy after policy after policy.
Ever tried to find a written document of "FOREIGN POLICY"??? Or any number of USG so called "policies"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_policy_of_the_United_States

To me, a "policy" is bullshit, derived in the mind of some bureaucrat, which at it's heart is only "opinion", whereby the government can cover their ass.
For ME, Jefferson had it down...

"In questions of power...let no more be heard of confidence in
man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the
Constitution."

In that light, bind these cops down by rule of law..not POLICY, as ANYONE can write a policy..even me..and here's mine..

POLICY..
(A)Should I be endangered by that which is a government or private "policy"..my policy shall supersede.
(B)Shoot to kill.

Here's a novel idea: How about we train cops not to kill innocent citizens?
